Xeno: All Out War
« on: January 02, 2018, 10:47:08 PM »
So, as seems to be a reoccurring annual thing now, I am putting on a game on the Hasslefree table at Salute 2018. This year, I am returning to the popular genre of sci fi.

First off, rather than fudge together my own rules this year, I went for modifying an existing set. Having enjoyed a few games of Mantic's The Walking Dead: All Out War, it struck me that this could be a great basis for the game.

The walkers become xeno's. Instead of having them all set up on the table as per the start of a game normally, we'll be using blip tokens and an xeno deck. Characters can spend an action spotting or shooting at blips within a certain range or if they have one, use a motion tracker. Blips within kill zones and in line of sight are auto spotted. When detected top card of the xeno deck is turned revealing what the blip represents - which can be nothing.

So without boring you anymore here is what I have been up to so far:

Looking great. Some excellent paint jobs on some of those figures.

It's not big, or clever, but let's do it anyway

Looks good! Where are the metal heads on the gene stealers from? They look great.

Three on a sprue, so I tend to buy quite a few. I've just ordered more but realised I'm still going to be short in the long run!  ;D

Did you borrow the xenomorph deck idea from Zombicide?  I like your "blip system" concept.  Definitely would try that for a similar style of game. Excited to see this come together.  :)

Just follow the link given. Prices are cut until Andy sobers up.

Checking it might not apply on the cheaper head sprues. Sorry about that.

mcfonz, the character's choice of minis and brushwork are PERFECT, CONGRATULATIONS!

But using GW's Genestealers as Xenos... is very, VERY lame!  :o

I don't think that's the case. Most of the ones in the link you posted are OOP, and even they had a genestealer conversion! lol

I think the conversion is pretty perfect.

And also slightly misplaced. I wasn't really thinking about trying to make not-alien-aliens. I have my own sandbox universe and love the Heresy Lurker heads. So I thought I would try them and the work. I also have traditional genestealers, and I have also placed these heads upon Hormagant bodies which work equally as well.

However, on the day, these will not be used. The plan is to use HF Mawes, but I am not painting those up and as I will continue to playtest ideas etc for a little while as well as shoot photo's of the terrain I figured I would include them as they are what I will be using for my game.

Also, I am very aware of the dawn of the lead blog, it's by a guy who will be at Salute helping us run games on the three tables we'll have!  :)

I've never played Zombicide! It's more loosely based around the sort of concepts you see in things like Space Crusade or Warhammer Quest where you turn over 'encounter' type cards when you enter a room etc. We had discussed ways in which to do this without having to instantly flood a table with a million xeno's and also help maintain that 'threat' atmosphere. This seemed to be the most simple way of doing it.
