Sources for Japanese Mythological Figures
« on: January 08, 2018, 01:49:29 AM »
Hi All,

Please forgive me. I'm sure this has come up before.

Lately I'm feeling inspired to begin a Japanese mythological/fantasy skirmish project and am wanting to do some research. Samurai types are easy, of course. But I'd greatly appreciate any help in finding some of the creatures of Japanese folklore. Here's what I have so far:

Dixon: unsurprisingly the best I've found so far. Dai-Oni, Oni, Goblins...
Reaper: seems to have an Oriental Dragon (and some samurai types) but not much else. Surprised there's so little
CP (I think it's them) have some animated household objects

What I'm especially looking for are Oriental styled demons, Tengu and Kappa. I could swear I've seen some before but now can't find them. Thank you for any help!

the rising sun CMON kickstarter is over, but you'll be able to pick it up at some point online through regular distribution.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cmon/rising-sun <<< you can browse the figures there by scrolling down the KS page.

from my experience the plastic minis are a little wobbly and soft (the smaller human sized guys), but the BIG guys (like the ogre magi/oni types here) are solid... and the detail on the sculpts is great! i find myself picking up the CMON kickstarter 100$ packs when i can catch them in time just for the mini haul-- im not a big fan of the board games themselves. you can find the packs on ebay too.

theres got to be a lot of other places to look, but this is the first thing i thought of.

good luck mate!

Thank you, Fanfavorite! Those are some good looking figures that I hadn't heard of before.

After a Google search, I found one source I'd forgotten about: the Kensei miniatures by a Spanish firm, Zenit. See here: http://shop.zenitminiatures.es/category.php?id_category=29
They have some great creatures, though the Kappa doesn't look right to me. Has anyone ever seen these figures, painted them?

I would also suggest looking for the old Clan War models - the Shadowlands army had some demons and oni.

Bushido (GCT studios) has a whole faction for Tengu and Oni and they have a kappa as well (it's only available during conventions)

Savage Wave (Oni)

Tengu Descension

Kappa:

Malifaux (Wyrd Games) has the Ten Thudners faction, which has some demons and tengu as well:

The best Kappa I've seen so far are unfortunately OOP, Tengu models used to do fantastic Kappa, but they sold them of, think Khurasan miniatures bought them and were planning to rerelease them and expand the range but that was several years ago and I haven't seen anything from them yet

Also might be worth noting that Alternative Armies does a lot of 15mm stuff

Thank you all for the pointers. I think so far the Zenit/Kensai are my favourite, but a few of the GCT look good also. One can only hope one day those Khurasan Kappa will make an appearance.

Not sure I want to go 15mm, but the AA range is a lot of fun!

Dixon did some Tengu recently. I could've sworn they did kappa too, but apparently not. I had some of the old Ral Partha kappa back in the day, and I'm sure there was someone else making them.

PM me if interested!

Also, CP Models has some nice oriental fantasy, IIRC.

If you are okay with 15mm, Alternative Armies has you completely covered with a wide assortment of creatures and characters from Japanese mythology.  I have several and while the humans are fair, the monsters like Tengu, Kappa, and Oni are really great sculpts.
