Relative Quality of Modern 1/3000th Ship Minis?
« on: January 10, 2018, 02:30:46 AM »
It's been a while since I've purchased any of these 1/3000th minis, so am just wondering about their relative sculpting, and casting quality, for the following ranges:

Davco - old range carried by Skytrex, and now sold by Navy Models and Books out of the UK
Denian
Heroics and Ros
Shapeways - newest production, for some models not available elsewhere

In the USA, I think 1/2400th is preferred, but costs for those are getting to be rather steep for someone on a tight budget.  I really like them, but the smaller 1/3000th minis are a lot more affordable, and the few I've purchased eons ago seemed to be quite nice.  Difficulty of purchase for the Denian and H&R minis is an issue too, for those of us not living in the UK, since Paypal isn't accepted by either company, last time I checked.  Perhaps that's changed with Denian now.

As I recall, the few Denian minis I got were very crisp, clean castings.

I have a few of either the Davco, or H&R ones too, but can't recall which, and don't know where they are right now.  Haven't looked at them in years, and never painted them, so may need to change that.  Got them eons ago, back when some hobby shops actually stocked them for direct sale to customers, here in the USA.

Wanting to order some Japanese, Chinese, and perhaps Taiwanese and Vietnamese vessels, for various scenarios, so think this smaller scale might be the way to do that.

Please rate them 1 - 4, in terms of quality, if you are familiar with multiple ranges, with 1 being the best, and 4 being the worst.  It's fine if you wish to rate one or more of them equally, if you think their quality is comparable.

Thoughts?
