Castillo de San Marcos in 28mm completed
« on: January 11, 2018, 08:36:26 AM »

I was afraid it would not get done in time but I managed to get the model of the Castillo completed with over a week before the convention (I cannot express the relief!). If you would like to see more than just the picture above follow this link  https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2018/01/so-close-i-can-almost-taste-it.html

Almost entirely scratchbuilt

I am majorly impressed. As someone who does a lot of historical reenacting in and around St. Augustine, that model is awesome and very evocative.

Seriously, anyone should be thrilled for the chance to game on that. There are not enough good words....

Anton,

Impressive.  Truly.  And so glad you got it 'done' in time for the game.  Always a large relief.

But done, you say?  I think not, sir.  There is all that stone cladding still to apply.  Many, many hours ahead of you to get there after the game.  But, don't worry, the base works admirably as your glacis.

What?  Who, me?  Evil?    >:D  Says who?  He wants to do it, don't you Anton?    ;)  Just a matter of the time to get it done.  I know these things.  We settle because we must, not because we want to.

Yes, indeed, stunning work.

Fifteensaway,

Actually the real Castillo de San Marcos was covered in a hard white stucco made from local seashells. The current deplorable state of the fortress is due to (literally) centuries of neglect. In retrospect it would have been easier to clad the thing in stone rather than trying to get the stucco smooth enough.

My next castle will probably be a Scottish Border Riever's stronghold so I will have the chance to do stonework on it.

No, no, we insist you do the whole fortifications of Cartagena. Or maybe just the Castillo de San Felipe. I'm sure you fancy a challenge. :D

By the by I have seen the use of seashell mortar at Cartagena. Hard to tell what the surface was originally like but the mortar was quite rough, with whole shells being evident amongst the crushed ones.

Superb work! :)

This monument is truly inspiring. A member of my gaming group also made one some years ago, it has appeared in some of our games since:

Carlos,

My first idea was the El Morro Castle in Havana, then I did the rough math and it would have been the size of a small car (it sits on a mountain, after all) Even someone as mad as I am would hesitate at the thought of storing such a thing!
