Thatch sculpting tutorials?
« on: January 12, 2018, 07:33:48 PM »
Does anyone know of any good sculpting tutorials for thatched roofs?  My BSC  entry is going to include some thatched elements and I don't particularly want to go down the route of teddy fur or terry towelling.
I imagine it's a pretty simple texture to work out but wondered if anyone had read any good guides?

Thanks  :)

There's a series of related threads on thatching at the bottom of your post.
If these aren't what your looking for. Then I an tell you how to make something similar to this style of thatching.

Mark.

You could have a look at the thatch on this thread.

Hum I don't seem to be able to get the link correct using my tablet.

It's on the medieval board by neunfinger, in December, unusual material but good result.

Tin Shed, that's a good result you've got there, I do like the bee hives and the oven is something you don't see very often.

Ok I think it's going to work now, the example is at the bottom of the 1st page and top of 2nd.

Both Tony and I .
Use similar techniques.Only different styling. So I'd  recommend Tony's tutorials.
The only tip I'd add,is I glue the first layer under the eves before detailing. As it reduces the chance of the clay(all types) ripping and separating from the model.

Vagabond. The oven, and hives are available separately from 1st corps miniatures.(the whole farmstead was for them.)

This style might not suit you because it's towel, it has a fine nap and was combed to make it smoother.

Mark I used a small acorn cup for my ovens, thanks for the info on the hives mine are on the right of the picture inside a shelter, mainly hidden from view.  No where near as magnificent as yours.
