I agree. The first one is too red. I can really recommend using a cheap light tent and two bright lamps. Works wonders. I voted for the second one mainly due to the whole dark and gritty feel of them. Works very well.

The quality of the painting and the photograph made the second entry a winner for me, though a bit more scenery could have improved it further 8)

While I think both are excellent, and the war-soiled, hard-bitten nature of the mercenaries is very, very well achieved, I think that the Erste Gruppe just have the edge - they seem wholly plausible in the setting. The photo seems to have depth of field and give a sense of windswept space against a threatening sunset. It might not be technically as good a photo, (I'm no way near experienced enough to say),  but I think it works. Only the uniform blonde moustaches seem unsettling. It would be good to be able to vote for both - one for the superior painting and the other for the way the artist has brought out the best in the figures.

Now the dice is cast, I would like to thanks everybody for all their comments, but particurlaly Baggings Wood cause I think it's the first time that someone calls me an "artist"  lol

About the redish light, my photo skills are probably as high as my painting ones, so I don't do it on purpose ;), but Boys, I liked it so I kept it !  I thought it gives a fire hint to the picture - and it hided a bit the lack of highlight on the figures too :D

In fact, there were no match with these beautiful mercenaries, the Tzar deserves the win of course. but I had already my victory by painting something.
And it was a very nice coincidence to be match with a fellow froggyman for this very first round !
Cheers, Tzar !

You right, one of the most important thing in the LPL is finding motivation to paint new or original stuff.
good luck for the next rounds !
