Best Late Roman miniatures
« on: January 24, 2018, 07:27:42 AM »
Hello LAF hive-mind, I am looking for best 28mm Late Roman miniatures that depict Late Romans around 350AD.

Which manufacturers have the best ones in sense of clothing and multiple poses? I am looking for around 10-12 different minis max, so need to have half a centurio or such :)

Many thanks for advice.

You can't go wrong with footsore, just email them and let them know what you are looking for. Always very helpful and very fast in shipping the figures out.

My favourites are Footsore. Wargames Foundry has a nice range, too, if somewhat limited. And while they are not for everyone taste, Gripping Beast metals are not bad at all. Crusader also has a range, but while it is not bad -I have some units- it is very limited in scope.

Footsore, yes !
Mixing them with arthurian and some saxon and you'll get the period's feeling , in my opinion  ;)

The BTD are good too.

Footsore makes amazing Late Romans.  I love them.

Also, for plastics, there is Gripping Beast's box (https://www.grippingbeast.co.uk/GBP09_Late_Roman_Infantry_plastic_44--product--5328.html)

I have not yet built or even seen them, yet, so I cannot say how they look.

It is a great period for good minis footsie, foundry, btd, Westwood, gripping beast and Saxon miniatures now owned by warlord are all good imo and mix pretty well so lots of choice

First Corp also have a growing range which look canny too

Cheers gents for the great input! Helps a lot. I just recently got interested in the period, even thinking of getting some re-enactment gear for the period :D and ordered/bought eight books about the period in question. So there's lots of reading ahead and hopefully some collecting of minis and even painting them :D

Echoing the others. Footsore is superb. Black Tree Design is also excellent. Gripping Beast has the most extensive range but some of the older castings need some work. All three are compatible however.

I really like the Westwind Arthurians. They also have seperate heads that are pretty good. I used them to do headswaps on the Crusader late romans and it works really well.

I assume you mean the metal ones, yes?

How are the plastics?  Have you tried them?  I would like to but it will have to wait for some other projects.

The Foundry range is best IMHO. Crusader are also nice (don't forget their Sub-Roman range). Saxon Miniatures are also very nice though now owed by Warlord so I am not sure if they are available again yet? As others have said Footsore are also excellent.

Not sure this is helping if you just want one company to go to?  lol

The more the merrier, right? :D

I hope to find most characterful ones out there, hopefully don't have to buy several packs to just get few that I really like then  o_o

Yes, I meant the metal ones. I didn't mention Saxon Miniatures which IMHO are even better than Footsore if such a thing is possible simply because the late Romans/Arthurians aren't available right now after the range has been taken over by Warlord.

Wset Wind is a bit miss or hit with me. Their unarmoured Romano British levies, the character figures  and several of the Picts and Irish are superb, but their armoured infantry was not to my liking to put it mildly.

The Gripping Beast plastics are slightly less bulky than the metal ones but quite good. I've built about 300 of them, mostly based on the Dark Age Warriors converted with West Wind separate heads and Footsore and Gripping Beast shields. Of course that was before their own Late Roman plastic figures came out.  The latter are also good but for some reason I don't really like the moulded on clavii. It limits their use a bit but that's just my opinion. Combine the Dark Age warriors with the Roman set, and even  bits of the new cavalry one and you get almost endless possibilities and rather cheap.

Another thing about the Gripping Beast plastics is that for some reason they are really robust compared to any other plastic figure I've handled. In fact they are sturdier than some METAL ones I have...
