Partizan 2018... La Gorgue Airfield 1918
« on: February 12, 2018, 07:24:10 PM »
Greetings...

Dave and I have started work on our game for Partizan in May...
Our game is based on an incident during Germany's 'Operation Georgette' on the 19th of April 1918.

You will find more pictures and words on the blog...

If there's anything in the 1st corps stuff that'll make life easier. Let me know and I'll get Simon to send it to you. As its always a joy to see what you both knock up for Partizan.

Mark.

I have finished painting my first batch of Portuguese infantry...

https://alystoysoldiers.blogspot.co.uk/2018/03/partizan-2018-portuguese-infantry.html

I am really pleased with these... they make an unusual addition to our WW1 collection.

All the best  Aly

Hi Dirk...
Your pictures plus a load of stuff from Nuno... Kingscarbine... are helping me creat an excellent little portfolio on this little know and under appreciated fighting force...
Yes I used the Great War Miniatures British ... they are not totally accurate but close enough.

All the best. Aly

Nice work!

Would you say that the Portuguese Blue-Grey was a close match to the French Bleu Horizon?
A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://www.kingdomtitans.ca/us/

Hi Calimero...

From what I can gather the earlier Portuguese uniforms were of a dull grey... one of those colours that is hard to pin down...
But when the production of uniforms was moved to the UK the material used was of a more metallic blue grey... there would of course been some variation between manufacturers.
I imagine that as far as toy soldiers are concerned the colour would be pretty similar to Horizon Blue...

I have found a photo of a re-enactor which apparently shows a good representation of the colour...

All the best. Aly

Hi Aly,
I think no one really will find the big difference with the original portuguese uniforms and the british in WW1. I like your idea of doing them, always wanted to do it but never did. When the project is complete, please post some pictures here.

Thank you Metternich...
I actually know of two others who have a WW1 Portuguese collection... I am hoping that there are more out there in wargames land.

I have posted a bit more information on the Portuguese on the blog...

We sometimes forget that the Western Front wasn't all British and French (and Belgians) on the Entente side, and Germans on the Central Powers side.  Our games and forces can, if the scenario (or collections) provide, be more "inclusive."  Bravo to you for demonstrating that with your game.
There was also a  Russian contingent (four brigades - the Russian Expeditionary Force) in action on the Western Front by mid-1916.  After the Revolution of 1917, some of them fought on in a French-formed Russian Legion.
Austro-Hungarian troops served in small numbers on the Western Front.  At the beginning of the war they supplied a few heavy guns and crew to reduce the Belgian fortifications.  But they also supplied some infantry and medical units in the last year of the war.  Below is from  http://militaryhistorynow.com/2012/10/01/the-forgotten-armies-of-the-western-front-1914-to-1918/  See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Expeditionary_Force_in_France   and https://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=124980

Austria Hungary
Germany’s principle ally in the war, Austria Hungary did most of its fighting on the eastern, Italian and Balkan fronts. However a small number of units from the Dual Monarchy did fight in France and Belgium along side their German cousins. These token contributions came at the war’s outset as well as in the final weeks of the conflict.

In 1914, Austria sent four batteries of heavy artillery to take part in the invasion of Belgium. [14] These batteries would go on to see in action at Namur, Antwerp and even the first battle of Ypres. They were withdrawn in the spring of 1915 and sent east to fight. Austrio Hungarian troops wouldn’t see the Western Front again until 1918.

In the final year of the war four Austrio-Hungarian infantry divisions were dispatched to help shore up its ally’s defences. [15] However, German high command, unsure of the fighting ability of these new units, split the regiments up and placed them under control of German generals. The Austrio-Hungarian infantrymen, already veterans of other actions, were even required to undergo German basic training to ensure their fighting ability was up to scratch. [16] It was a failed gesture it turned out. Once placed in the Verdun sector, these retrained troops were decimated by a combined American and French assault that included tanks. [17] The remnants of these units would soldier on until November 1918.  (citing Peter Jung's Osprey"The Austro-Hungarian Forces in World War I (2) 1916-18" (Osprey 2003), on the deployment of the k.u.k. XVIII Korps on the western front in 1918.)  [Note, other sources indicate the Austrians did not suffer such heavy losses]
