Feral Elf Project - A most feral horse
« on: February 16, 2018, 03:17:25 PM »
So what should a proper feral elf - ready for war - look like?

There's obviously Tolkien with his somewhat disconnected wood elf kingdoms, but I somehow imagine their appearance to be not too different from their cousins in Bruchtal.
Then there's the LOTR movies, and many classic fantasy publications, where they are presented as ranger types with pointy ears. Often hooded.

To me the old range from Citadel/GW came closest to an original, good looking and consistent presentation of a forrest / feral elves force. They had so much presence, an the fluff was of the kind that developes itself while playing. I have in fact re-collected many of the models to eventually build some sort of small war band. But even this range has grown old. The sculpting is just not up there with what can be done when releasing modern figurines.

So I sat down with Mike and started working on a range of feral elves. The first bits are ready, and I really like where this is going.

First concept, build on a range of dollies that was made.

Not sure how much detail I really want to add since the open spaces will allow for nice magical paintings or some serious woad.

More soon!

Lovely sculpt  :)

The only thing I would suggest is some sort of torc around his neck (but not a torc obviously).
cheers

Very promising indeed. I think I agree with the idea of some jewelry.

We've been there, and it didn't work too well. :--(

maybe a little more decoration on the torc and maybe an amulet so it doesn't look like a slave collar

I like it certainly looks like a more low tech feral elf.

I have to say my favourite feral type elves  are the old Grenadier wood elves sculpted by Copplestone.

I use the Hordes Circle Orobos figures, Bloodtrackers, Tharns and Ravagers etc.
I don't like much from the PP ranges, but they do Feral Elves superbly.

I say leave the torc off.

It's easy for the end consumer to add one if you want to convert to add them, but removal is a nightmare if you don't want them.

Lovely sculpt, exactly what I was hoping for when you posted the first sketches online. How tall is this chap?

I’ve always been a big fan or the Jes Goodwin and Mark Copplestone figures (for Citadel and Grenadier respectively) but I do have a soft spot for Gary Morely’s wardancers.

I also prefer the version without the torc, I really like the distinct lack of metalwork; It means you could paint the arrow heads and spear tips as flint (elfshot) and make them truly feral or primative.

Thankyou for posting this preview here rather than just on facebook. I don’t have an account (and I have no desire the make one) so I can only read the comments if I borrow the other-half’s phone (if you post in a group I can’t see anything).

Ditto on being a lovely sculpt.  Could be used for so many projects. Hopefully there will be females also.

No torc please. As per Loop , thanks for previewing off Facebook.

My only critique is he looks squat in the legs, not tall and lithe like expected of elves. If you look at the placement of the belly button and carry on down, his crotch would be just above his knees - hardly any thigh length.

looking forward to seeing more.

I think that's just an issue with the belly button being too low than the overall proportions being wrong.

That said, yes, he has "man proportions" rather than "elf proportions". I guess I don't mind? I all depends on what Schrumpfkopf intends, I suppose.

Thanks everybody for their interest and comments. I defo leave the torc off for now - I wil get the first mini cast up to play around with, and then I see where we go from there.
We have a few fun bits ready, but I think finding the right kind of jewelry will be very important, especially if we hit character models.

As for the bodies - yes, I think they would even work for humans. In my head elves were in general never fragile. Feral elves would be the fellas that have thick hemp ropes instead of muscles.
The minis are large 28mm (so in fact more like 30mm)
