I tend to use Swan Morten scalpels, usually a 3 handle with 10 A blade. I also have a bigger one.
I use a Stanley knife for tough stuff.

This is a priced specialist tool in my arsenal. They are very minute but sturdy and easy to sharpen. I find them very useful for carving in tight corners in metal miniatures. The set comes with brush thin handle, two chisel blades, and three curved blades of increasing sizes.

How well does an x-acto knife do against the newer tougher metal in miniatures, that's what broke my old knife.

Once I would've sworn by X-Acto, but now I'm more than likely to swear at it, as you're being charged for quality, when in fact it's now on par with Excel. Bought an assortment pack of blades and the contents acquired a coating of rust, despite not being exposed to the elements. I read somewhere that X-Acto blades were outsourced years ago.

The British made Swann-Morton's my preferred brand now and re-discovered the range while swapping out the 10A blade on a Citadel rebranded Plasplugs' retractable precision knife sk816, bought from a UK GW store in the 90s.

I have had one handle for thirty odd years, being a brass type material the butt end doubles as a file cleaner.

Mainly using 10a blades (the 10 blade is great for self surgery, the blade extends back to where I keep gripping it!).

A big box of blades bought from Squires will keep me busy for ages.

Blades I do not break often get demoted to use on another handle for cutting Milliput and applying both Milliput and greenstuff.
