Gaslands vs. Axels and Alloys
« on: February 21, 2018, 05:54:27 PM »
I'm ready to plunge into post-apocalyptic hotwheels/matchbox battles and I am trying to decide on Gaslands vs. Axels and Alloys. I know Axels and Alloys is free but the price is not much of an issue. Can anyone recommend one or the other?

Simple enough, you make the decision on what is best for you.
You know A&A is free, and you said cost wasnt an issue.
Order Gaslands, and as you are waiting on it to arrive DL A&A and read up and play up.
When Gaslands arrives repeat as above.
Then you decide on what is best for you.
No one can decide for you which is better. Only their opinion on why they said said rules is best for them.
My two cents anyway. :-)
And for an extra half cent, i have A&A and have for some time. I got Gaslands a few weeks back. I also own a few other auto combat games. So i am no help past the above suggestions. :-)

One thing to bear in mind might be that the community for Gaslands seems to be very active and friendly.

i've played A+A a couple of times ages ago and liked it but i seem to recall there were some gaps in the rules; gaslands is super popular now, but haven't played it yet; my FLGS can't even get if from their supplier.  i also agree with the others - the only recommendation that really matters will be your own based on playing both.  maybe a better question to ask is "what are the differences?"and from there you can have an idea on how they each play.

All depends on who you game with. I play A&A because I have 8 people and 2 hours.

Quite so! it seems that once everybody is glueing plastic guns on toy cars the whole "this is a silly hobby, don't take it to seriously" point finally sinks in.

Lots of templates and special dice.

None of which actually purchasing.  The templates are all in the back of the book AND can be printed off the Gaslands website, and the dice are just six-siders read as 1 = Hazard, 2 = Spin, 3 = Slide, and 4-6 as Stick-Shift.  Not exactly X-Wing when it comes to specialized parts.  Fancier components might be nice, but not obligatory - and if you want them justifying the cost is easy when you're buying the actual figs at a dollar apiece.

So i got the gaslands rulebook and ran through a couple practice runs to get movement down and it's prerty simple and straightforward.  The only thing I've noticed is that you really need to keep your speed gear up orherwise you'll have to wait until the next turn.  Gaslands has 'gear phases' in each turn.

Gaslands is the best game I've found in some time in any miniature genre.

Yes  ;D

There's also a commercial set of rules based on Axles and Alloys but with more options and some more balance.
