Vikings for Saga
« on: February 25, 2018, 08:03:48 PM »
I've painted a few bondi for a Saga viking warband. Figures are by Saxon Miniatures (now Warlord). These are the first 28mm guys I've painted in a while, so there were a few kinks to work out – the next batch will get more attention to the faces and beards, and a bit more darklining to separate certain areas (specifically the shield rims from main surfaces of the shields), but overall I like how they've turned out.

I like them. Faces are not half bad, quite the opposite!

These are absolutely fine for a 'grand skirmish' game, no need to improve on your technique, other than for plain sport's sake, of course.  :)

As SAGA is played with several units, rather get something on the table and get stuck in, than getting bogged down with meticulous display-style painting, as no-one is likely to notice the difference between these and some given extra attention when on the table.

I'd be very pleased with this level, even for pure single mini bases skirmishes, but of course, you may want to go to town with your heartguard and warlord  :)
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Thanks everyone. Admittedly, with all the beards and nasals/spectacle helms, there's not a lot to the faces of these figures, but I'd like to try to get a slightly crisper result since faces are always a focal point.

Argonor, as far as going to town with the hearthguard and warlord, that's the idea. My plan is to reserve the brighter colours, fancy shields and elaborate hem designs for the upper class guys. Meanwhile the levies will be all in neutral colours.

Absolutely nothing wrong with your painting style - they look grand! I am looking forward to seeing the rest of your warband, especially the warlord and hearthguard.

These look great. Really muted, earth tones suit them perfectly. I think the faces look great, FWIW. Possibly you spent too long looking at them? You should be really proud of these.

Thanks for the kind comments, all.

I think this may be it. I think I was reacting to seeing them 2800 pixels wide after having just uploaded the photos, which is always a bit humbling.
