EBAY's Global Shipping Service
« on: March 02, 2018, 02:49:58 PM »
I've made the mistake of ipting into this schem and it's a nightmare, there's no explaination of how it works with basic, like where to post it to... anyone else used this? I'm stuck with it for a few multiple lots I've sold, and having promised to combine postage which I can no longer fully control.

There was a thread on this in 2016 (I thought it was a couple of months ago, where does the time go!!!!) - http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=88384.0

I think you'll find plenty of sympathy in there

Yep, in short...don't.  It's absolute garbage, can take months, and it's a huge scam.

You post it to a central depot in ... Maidstone I think? It's somewhere on eBay where to send it, but I don't remember where. You put the code number on the outside of the parcel and it is automatically re-directed to the correct address.

Emotions tend to run high on the subject for some reason, even running to bizarre abuse if you've used the service (which I have and still do sometimes).

However, don't use the service if -

1) You have multiple lots which you may want to combine to a single address. It doesn't allow this, which is a major flaw.

2) It is a small value item which you would normally send unregistered, or the postage will be very high compared to the item's price (although buyers do see the cost before bidding, so they make their own choice).

3) You don't want to sell it FREEPOST, so you cover the UK portion of the postage yourself, otherwise the buyer is paying for two lots of postage, which will shove the costs way up and probably not attract a lot of interest. Plus, it's a bit unfair.

The advantage to the seller is that you don't have to calculate individual postage costs to every country on the globe, because each potential buyer
can see the cost up front (you never see the postage costs as the seller). The world is your marketplace and despite some of the rage expressed online, since using the service (for the appropriate lots, see above) roughly half of my sold lots have been won by overseas buyers. Also, it is a protected and trackable service that the buyer pays for in the total amount (eBay automatically take their cut on payment) for around the same price as your premium registered, tracked postage. Basically as long as it gets to the UK depot, the parcel is then protected from loss or damage because eBay take over as couriers and will cover any losses.

For me in Canada, it’s a scam.
They tack on duty and taxes on top of high shipping costs.
Here, there is NO duty on hobby collectables, regardless of origin country.
Any seller on eBay that used it has lost a sale from me.

+1

Guaranteed I won't even look at the item as the GSP will triple the price or worse.

Doesn't it also add duty & taxes even if shipping from inside EU to another EU country?
Seemed to do that on a few items I was looking at a while back.

I really have no idea what I'm doing.

Yeah okay, the goat thing is understandable.
