1812 Project.
« on: March 02, 2018, 07:08:20 PM »
Hi all.

I thought i'd make my first post about the start of my 1812 project, I plan to make various elements of the French and Russian forces during the invasion and consequent retreat, ideally in order to play Blackpowder or Sharp Practice.
I intend to make a few units to represent the III Corps, specially Razout's 11th Division.

So to start things off here is the first fusilier of the 18th line infantry. What i've found out about the uniforms isn't much, and much of the elaborate features that distinguished this unit from others were removed by 1810 (though some continued to be used), so by arguing a 'campaign look' I can get away with the minor change of the cuff flap being red and leave the big differences to officers, grenadiers, voltigeurs etc.
If anyone does have any information on them from some obscure book on your bookshelf, please do give me a yell.

Secondly we have the start of my retreat from Moscow force, taking during the recent "beast from the east" snow. I plan on having a few more units like this and then filling out the rest with some skirmishers and perhaps cavalry.

Lastly the start of my russian force, a Jaeger of the 49th. Mostly just a test for the colour I wanted.

What do you guys think about this meagre selection?

A good start  :)

I like the outdoor photo, gives a stark contrast to the colours  8)

Re the 18th Ligne, I suppose you're already familiar with the following plates by Frédéric Pouvesle :

Both can be found on the 18th line reenactment group's website :

http://18eme-de-ligne.fr/

The green on your Russian Jäger is probably very close to the real thing (Russian uniforms were dyed in a shade of dark green that was said to be close to black) but I tend to favour a lighter hue which looks better from a distance and makes the figures 'pop' a little more (and of course one can argue quite convincingly that the vegetal dyes used in the early C19th weren't as fast as their modern chemical equivalents and were prone to fading after a few weeks/months in the field). An alternative would be to paint the rolled greatcoat in a lighter and warmer shade of beige to brighten up the miniature.

Strangely I hadn't found these plates before, though i'd been using some similar ones so nothing to radically different, however they do contain some I did not have and are much more clearer so thank you very much.
My issue is getting around the fusilier plume which would be similar to the 1812 Bardin grenadier/voltigeur, with a red ball and blue "top". I think i'm going to run with the idea that the 1810 shako meant the decoration were standardised and so not as elaborate by the time of the Russian campaign.

Thank you for the resources and comments, it's been nice getting some feedback and ideas.

By coincidence the "Beast from the east" has given me a nudge to press on with my Retreat from Moscow project as well. Like you I want o use it for both Black Powder and Sharp Practice. Picked up some terrain from Ebay over the weekend and looking at Mats for the snow base. Handily enough one of the mat manufacturers is in a village about 2 miles away so I am going to have a look before I buy.

Nice looking job well done.

I'm glad i'm not the only one who was inspired. Do feel free to upload pictures of your progress here, perhaps we could turn this thread into a 1812 project for all?

Those figures are fantastic. Now i'm tempted to purchase Poles but I must be disciplined. I'm loving the cossacks as well, I have the Perry command set in the works currently.
What is the mat company near you, and are they pricey?

The mat company are called artistic impressions, on ebay they are doing a 6x4 feet vinyl for £44.99, they only do vinyl, and have an offer doing buy 2 and get 1 free.

Hoping I can pop in and feel the quality of the mats before buying and see if I get a wee discount for cash and not having to pay postage.

Popped into Wargames Foundry today and picked up some Russian command, lovely place and the chap there offered to make me a drink as I browsed, very civilised I must say!
