Our French Foreign Legion presentation at Tactica 2018
« on: March 05, 2018, 12:04:13 PM »
Hi,
in 2017 Frank and I decided to present a participation game at Tactica 2018 together. A few years back we did a huge Sudan game. This time we volunteered for the French Foreign Legion ( the gaming table version ) and started our project with some help from Vasa who turned out to be a big help on the final yards and on the show itself.

Tactica was 10 days ago and we had a great time with lots a nice gamers who also had a good time ( I hope )

In preparation of the game I digged out my Fort Zinderneuf from Hudson & Allen painted 124 Figs and a cannon from November to February and added them to my excisting collection. Frank painted some Tuareg on camel and build this fantastic game board. Together we watched Beau Geste again and again. I read the book, I wrote an article about the Legion in general for the Tactica magazine and finally we managed to get a story together that included Laurel and Hardy, Beau Geste, Lejaunne, The Red Shadow, a mirage and hundreds of Arabs on Horse and Camel and foot ! Here are some pics.
Our first game with a look over the gameboard. I found the pic on a visitors website who`s name I can not recall

Our second game with players from the States, Ireland and Saxony ( what a mix ) - pic from same website as above
you see me grabbing the dice of the bag of doom or the damage bag. That was big fun.

This pic is by me. It shows some Rif Raf minis. Excellent figures I got the chance to lay my hands on about 8 years ago. They fired at Zinderneuf....constantly... when someone was on the lookout...

and sometimes they scored a hit

I am sure every wargamer playing colonial knows warflag and the adventures of the Red Shadow. I had to pay this great website my tribute because it gave us so much inspiration all these years back so The Red Shadow sometimes showed up in the game....

Cheers
Björn

Sculpted by Richard Ansell, if I am not mistaken. I've still got a load of their Spanish including infantry and support weapons, but missed out on getting the Rif Kabyls as well; they are sadly incompatible with most other 28mm ranges out there, but outstanding figures on their own. I think they might work with the Unfeasibly range, but haven't seen that comparison in the flesh so far.

they work with the unfeasibly range perfectly.
In our game we used mainly Unfeasibly, Old Glory, some Perry, some Rif Raf and 2 Artizan minis. All worked fine together.

Me too, lovely stuff, hope you'll bring it to Tactica next year? ;)

Do you have a figure in the game that was painted as 'the Red Shadow?'
I looked at all the photos, did not see him.
The reason I ask, is I know Ian and am sure he  would enjoy you mentioning his gaming.
He does run some wonderful games.

PS, I think I found the figure.
Must have looked at the photos a number of times and missed him.

Hi Marine0846!
Its the guy in red on the white horse in the last pic fighting off the Arabs single-handedly.  It is not the same mini as on the Red Shadow website but its from Old Glory and I recall he uses the same range.
Please send my regards to Ian.
