I opened a new window with the first Sea Wolves in the picture and then alt-tab'ed for about ten times until all changes were clear to me. Although the miniatures were slightly changed, it could have been more IMO (more contrast to the painting, a little bit more variation on the bases). So that looses points for me.
For the Celestial Knights I like the environment. It works well for the miniatures and adds some extra color to the picture. I do think the light blue does not work well together with the silver. I think a darker blue had worked much better for the space marines. In addition, I would *really* make the light blue frame in the picture black or white. The light blue doesn't work well for the picture IMO and gives it a really weird color.

In the end, after some doubting, I voted for number two. I like the total look more and the other one looses some points for me for not being really new.

I did the same thing and in the end I voted for the Space Marines as well. The photograph and the lighting is good, and the setting as well. The story is nice as well and I agree that the background colour doesn't help much, something neutral would be better. Personally I think the light blue works better than dark blue as I think dark blue would make the whole model appear too dark.

The sea wolves benefit from some touch-ups and a better picture, but they aren't really new so they won't get my vote.

Is it just me or does the German sailor second from the right look like Roger Moore?

Looks more like John Le Mesurier, to me:

I've also jJust noticed the mud on the space marines boots.  Very nice - subtle - which is why it is very nice :)

I hate SM but "new is better" so the Empire'sons win (as they are always supposed to be) and I really like their very green lay out

The 'mud' is indeed quite unvisible in the pictures. I drybrushed it on after the models were done. Wasn't aiming at mud, more a small amount of dust, hence the subtlety.

@Male: when thinking up the colourscheme (dark) blue was the second colour I considered. But in the end I went for this color as the blue would make the model appear somewhat darker as this one. At Noorderspel I painted one with blue, looking good, but not as good as these imo :)

Since Round two is well-and-truly over, I thought that folks might like to see some individual shots of the Sea Wolves with better detail:

Your skin tones are fantastic, even in closeup... I think I hate you.  lol

Skin is, for me, the hardest thing to get right and my least favourite part of painting!

Your hatred, it... nourishes me... o_o o_o o_o

Skin/faces/eyes are the things that I lavish the most care and attention on. In this instance (as in most instances) I used the Foundry flesh triad, although I only used the base shade and the intermediate tone with a further intermediate tone mixed between them. I don't like the stark "jumps" of the trademark Kevin Dallimore stripey Foundry painting style, so I try to get more of a blended effect. I'm glad that it seems to be working...! ;)
