Love Sabot's scarecrow!  Cool.

For OP: Take fake fur, an electric hair trimmer, and 'buzz' cut the fir close to the backing cloth - but not too close.  Leave chunks in place as you like and clear 'paths' where you want for either paths or a patch of hay bales. 

And don't forget you can spray paint fake fur for a lot of different looks other than what comes off of the store shelf.
