Can anyone help me paint THAT miniature?
« on: March 08, 2018, 03:00:43 PM »
Does anyone have THAT miniature? The one that they put off painting because they have no idea where to start on it?

Well for me it's the Conan Sabertooth Tiger. I don't want it to be too flashy with orange fur and black stripes, I'm trying to the this kind of paint scheme

But have no clue how to go about achieving it. Can anyone give me any schemes or ideas on how to go about getting it to look even half as nice as that above image?

I'm using the current citadel paint range if that helps.

Thanks

Yep, I have it but I went the flashy way  :D

But if I had to hazard a guess how this one was painted I would do it like this:

Belly some broken white colour like Bleached Bone (a Vallejo term, since I don't know most Citadel ones), washed with Agrax Earth and highlighted again with the same Bleached Bone and then with some white.

Flanks and back done in a sandy brown colour, highlighted in Bleached Bone and then the back spine and flank stripes done in a watered down orange brown and perhaps a tad orange brown highlight on top of the spine.

Maw done in black and teeth picked out in Bleached Bone and white, claws in black and grey.
I wish I were a glowworm
'cause glowworms 're never glum

You might want to take a look at the "Sorastro's Painting" channel over on Youtube. He's regularly using a wet blending technique that would be quite suitable for this kind of effect, and isn't too tricky or time-consuming (apart from possibly a bit more drying time due to the use of medium to keep the paints fluid for longer).

I suspect just watering down the paints could be a bit risky due to the strong fur texture, so using medium and wetblending could work out better.

Here's one video where he paints a Star Wars Dewback, and the blending is shown to good effect:

Maybe like the two bottom ones? I guess the big one is too flashy ..

That is a nice mini, and I can understand your trepidation...

For me, it's not just one 'THAT' miniature, but an entire 'THAT' range actually; the old Rackham Confrontation line. It must be the absolutely stunning original paint jobs, but I feel right intimidated starting on them.

I've sat down a handful of times now already, minis arranged in front of me, ready to start painting, and then over-analyzing the entire thing and eventually putting them back because of the fear factor... ::)

One of my 2018 resolutions (tentative) is to finally make a start on them. I think it'll be the Goblin Ninja and Samurai range first, because hey; I can do black at least lol
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Thanks folks. Well it's undercoated so that's the first step taken :P

Just finishing up the few I've already started then I'll have no excuse...I'll keep you all posted with the results.

I'm trying to the this kind of paint scheme

If you are seeking that result it is rather easy.
3 paint pots needed: light brown, khaki and white
(I use Vallejo 72040 leather brown, 72043 beasty brown and 72002 arctic white)

You could use a drop of black to dull the flashy brown and khaki if you like. The fur will become greyish brown then.

Mix white and khaki to a very light sand tone and paint the entire miniature with it. Let it dry thoroughly.
Drybrusch it white.
This is how it shall look on the belly/underside and inside the thighs/legs.
If the contrast between sand and white is not to see, either use a sand wash or repeat the entire step with a darker sand tone.
Paint the upside with the brown and try a transition to the lighter underside on the flanks by mixing in the sand tone inreasingly. Dont mind if you get no perfect blending (this will be gone when drybrushed). Let it dry thoroughly.
Drybrush the back and flanks with a mix brown and white.
Drybrush the back with and even lighter mix of brown and white.
Drybrush the transition on the flanks thorughly with white.

This is pretty much what you´ll get (although I added more black for the grey wolves):

It's from the new (or not so new anymore) Conan boardgame by Monolith Board Games LLC.
Its the "Sabretooth Tiger" ... who would have guessed ...

Have a look here. Lots of pictures of painted Conan miniatures.

I've started on it. :D Base colour and highlights are done. Tonight will be the light underbelly. I'll try and get a WIP shot of it...So far, so good though!

Well the deed is done! I'm actually pretty pleased and honestly, wasn't as tough a job as I thought once I started painting.

Sadly slightly blurred. I'll try and get a better pic of it when there's  some decent light, put hurray, it's done! :D
