Japanese shrine
« on: March 10, 2018, 12:44:52 PM »
After creating some village buildings I am now starting with a shrine. After a couple of concepts I settled on a design that will allow me to change between two layouts. Here is a first look of the base. This is the "easy" version with filler texture between the framework. I will also build a "hero" model later, where I will cut out the framework in detail. But for now ...  TADAAA!  :D

Next up are the entrance stairs and the floor part.

A little update. Got the first test build of the shrine base done. No weathering yet, so it looks a little too pristine. Also it's all the easy version. The stairs are just a flat plane with texturing.

Some progress ... walls are done. For the roof I have reused an old Samurai Castle roof, just to see what it could look like. I will make a different, wood shingles roof for this set.

And here is a look at the interior.

To make the roof fold-flat will be a challenge. Wish me luck  :D

I have managed to make the roof fold flat!

Here it is assembled (but the two roof modules apart so you can see them) ...

... and here it is flat folded!

This is the roof on the platform and walls.

I have also started to texturing of the roof and completed the roof core part so far.

Only concern is if it will bend once we start putting lead miniatures on it. Other than that, it's perfect

I have a little under-construction below the platform to avoid that. I will show it later. It will hold. I'll make a test with metal minis soon :)

Glad you like it guys  :)

Here is a pic of the first full beta build. I have built the roof in a non-fold-flat (aka fixed glued) version including the outer rim edges. But honestly I think the fold flat version without them (I will build it next) will no look worse as you can see the details under better!

As the next step I will focus on the extension for the larger shrine versions ...

So about the weight the platform will carry. I built the extended version last night and thought I just try it with the metal minis from my old LotR-collection.

This is the platform (built with 160gsm paper, not the heaviest cardstock) holding 531grams of metal minis without any problems.

And this is the (very simple) part I have added underneath. Paper is strong!  :D

With this build I am not even close to the limit that would break it and if you use stronger card stock it will hold even ridiculous amounts of metal if required!

I got the remaining extension parts done and am now in pre-release mode, creating instructions and double checking all the files. So here is a look at the expanded build version!

Happy building,
Chris

I have been working on the final clean up before the release, adding dirt and moss and also the fold-flat conversion of parts.

Now my loyal working crew is starting on the final test build. Here they are preparing the fold flat parts of the side extension.

And once that is assembled, they can slot it into the walls.

Now they can take a break and have to wait for me to update and clean-up the missing platform parts!  :D

I have actually also added a moss layer for the walls but didn't use it in this build. So many options!!!

Looking forward to this set design coming to an end  :)

Your flat-fold conversion is ingenious, as well as the slotting modules!
What more could somebody ask? Congrats!!!
