The Battle of Auerstadt
« on: March 14, 2018, 08:54:20 PM »
The Battle of Auerstadt... October 14, 1806. We had a wargame of the  battle using Volley & Bayonet and 20mm plastic figures.
some shots of the battlefield. In the foreground is the town of Rehehausen and on the right is the key of the battle: Hassenhausen.
Gudin's division is deployed around Hassenhausen.

A few more bird's eye views of the battlefield. The mansion with the pool is the town of Puchran.

But Friant's division enters the battlefield. Here, Friant receives his orders from Davout. Friant places his force on the right of Gudin's division.

The Prussian Left wing presses forward. The Right Wing advances slowly and cautiously... The Prussiaan commander wants to concentrate his forces  before attacking the French

The first wave of the Prussians is repulsed. Most Prussian regimets retreat in disorder. But now the two Prussian divisions of the Right Wing make a coordinated attack on the French Left. Fortunatley fresh troops [Morands Division] arrive just in time. Will they save the day?

Prussian Light Cavalry attacks their  French counterparts and they retreat with losses.
But the Prussians have plenty reserves: this time the Prussian heavy cavalry attacks ! This proved too much for the light cavalry who retreats in disorder

The final stages of the battle. Friant’s division managed to repulse repeated cavalry attacks but now it is stretched too much. Some regiments have exposed their flanks to the enemy. The Prussians attack immediately with their infantry and cavalry  to the front and flanks of the French regiments! Friant's and Gudin's divions break. Hassenhausen and Puchran are now in Prussian hands.
Morand's division vainly attempts to stem the Prussian tide but ... helas ! History can't be repeated- not this time! In the last pic you can see the Prussians pushing the French off the table, [...I mean the battlefield]. A disaster for the French...

Auerstadt , Davout’s finest hour . It would be difficult to equal the “ Iron Marshall “ and his 3rd Corps deeds on that fateful day . A comprehensive AAR , did you leave any possibility of Bernadotte turning up ?

No, we didn't leave any possibility of Bernadotte turning up!. The point was to repeat Davout's triumph, not to just save the day. But perhaps we can repeat the battle and examine this possibility some other time. [That's why I love war-gaming! You always have a second chance  ;)]

I had the honor to be there, commanding the right Prussian flank with Wartensleben.
As we managed to make a coordinated attack against the French center and left, we made the life of the table Davout difficult, the difference in number was telling, in other words, numbers have the quality of their own  ;)

The French army is a generous contribution, painted by our colleague Dimitris Kontos

The lads brought also a Davout miniature, painted by ArisK, a gorgeous table setup and a very enjoyable game!
