Recently whilst in London I had the opportunity to run a mini-campaign of Kings of War Vanguard for myself and two friends. We used the recently released Ice and Iron supplement, and played a four-game campaign detailing the Black Order's journey into the northern wastes and its battles against dwarven slavers and ogre mercenaries. Campaign scoring was 0 points for a loss, 2 points for a draw and 4 points for a victory.

Vanguard is definitely shaping up to be the skirmish game to play if you're not into GW, in my opinion. It's still got a bit of balancing work to go before it is as tournament-friendly as Kings of War, but it's getting there. If you're interested in a mini-report, read on!

Some great looking war bands there! I've been looking for a bigger fantasy skirmish system, so might have to take a look at Vanguard.

Vanguard is great - you can find the basic rules for free on Mantic's site, here: https://www.manticgames.com/mantic-games-free-rules/

Wanted to share this as it follows on directly from the Vanguard campaign above, lorewise: our first foray into Rangers of Shadow Deep last weekend. Really nice, tight rules system - very straightforward but very fun. Ended up just using figures in my collection and we had a great time. Played through Mission One: The Missing, Scenario One: The Deserted Village, and just barely made it out alive! Next time we'll introduce a second Ranger into the mix.

Talsfjord. Silent as the grave. The Black Order patrol is unaware of the ambush yet to come.

Brynthorn, ranger of the Black Order, and his men: Reiftyr and Amalric, men of the Guard, Aedvard and Gherrit, archers of the yeomanry, and Jari, a dwarven pathfinder from the Ephorate.

The Dark rises: a walking corpse picks its way through the ruins on the outskirts of Talsfjord, sensing living flesh...

Aedvard and Gherrit nock arrows as a rat-swarm bursts from one of the townhouses.

As the patrol scatters in the chaos, undead emerge from the Tal river to attack Reiftyr, whilst Brynthorn is nearly brought down by a rat-swarm and a zombie.

Jump-scare! Gherrit picks the lock of a townhouse only for a zombie to burst out from within.

The guardsman Amalric finds the last of the clues on the southern road, whilst Gherrit covers the patrol's retreat.

Both Reiftyr and Brynthorn are badly wounded trying to hold back the Dark at the Tal river. Aedvard the yeoman manages to drag them back before a rat-swarm can devour them.

So detailed... well done bud. I know how hard it is to get good photos of battle boards with those tones... the photos look great, but that must look amazing in person.

That's exactly how I pictured Rangers of Shadow Deep games being when I was reading the rulebook. I must get going with it!

And dare I say, that could pass for a Myth tabletop conversion  :D

Me too! If only they were easier to transport :D

Cheers mate - yes it's harder than expected as with the snow and mud everything kind of blends in to one big grimy blob. :D Oh well. Looks OK in person, would definitely do a few things differently second time around though.

Please do! It would suit your stuff particularly well. And yeah, you might have noticed I purposefully went with two Warriors, two Bowmen, and a molotov Dwarf for this mission... ;)

Wonderful stuff

Thanks :)

Cheers. It'll see use in a variety of game systems I hope.

Here's some more terrain I'm working on and some completions, fruits of a quiet (ill) weekend. A (pretty large, about 12") hill, a threshold for a village setup, two houses (one healer/shaman hut, one old soldier's hut) one outhouse and two difficult terrain patches.
