Dappled horse tutorials?
« on: March 23, 2018, 04:02:12 PM »
Has anyone spotted any good tutorials for painting dappled grey horses?  I need to create soft, diffused white spots on the fur, but how to get that effect where the edges are softer than the center?
White mixed with glaze medium leaves a solid border/tidemark and soft center, opposite of what I want.
My airbrush control isn't good enough to do it that way, unless I make a stencil perhaps.
Oil paint spots diffused out with white spirits?
Sponging leaves too random a mark, nowhere near uniform enough.
Perhaps some sort of water soluble pencil crayon experiment?
Stippling doesn't create defined enough shapes

Any ideas guys?  :)

I've done it several ways but I read a recent post here which employed greasy pastels which seemed simple and effective. Who was that?

I have used Kevin Dallimore's version where the dapple is a lighter version of your final colour and then you dot the centres with your final coat colour.

Thanks for this: I'm currently putting off painting a marketplace full of farm animals because I'm not sure how to paint some of the skin colours on them. Local cows are often dappled to shis will help me get the effect right...
