Looking for an Infographic - Helmets
« on: March 25, 2018, 12:02:53 PM »
Hoping the LAF hive-mind can help with this. Some while ago, someone posted an infographic featuring the evolution of helmets through the middle ages. It may have been as long as two years ago. It was arranged cladistically, which I found very interesting, and now I'm pottering about in the later period I'd find it very useful,if only I could find it again.

Anyone remember it?

Yes, it’s a nice idea but there are several connections shown there which simply don’t follow, and a couple of things which make no sense at all.
It would be interesting to see this done properly and to a higher quality.

The chapel de fer evolution looks a bit off. They were worn slot earlier than the chart shows.

It's also quite insane that the Froghelm/tournament helm isn't shown as being a descendant of the Great Helm.
Edit: Ha, looks like thats already been said. Thats what I get for skimming.  lol

Morions are mentioned in transcripts from the Caribbean as early as the turn of 1500, listed separately to helmets. *shrug*

Maybe the hive mind needs to kick this thing around to LAF standard?

Its still a cool graphic, even with a few anomalies.

If the costume designers of Vikings had had it, things might have been a little different...

It’s much more likely that the morion / cabasset style of infantry helmet was an evolution of the kettle hat or chapeau de fer, than derived from the burgonet, as suggested in the original infographic.
