Great War Gebirgsjager?

(1/2) > >>

axabrax:
Looking for 28mm WW1 Alpine troops like the German Württemberg Battalion Rommel lead at Caporetto.

Brigade Games seems to have some generic Austrian troops with similar uniforms and their Ends of the Earth Gebirgsjager look close if you subtract the MG34s and MP40s. Maybe use these guys with some Jager cap head swaps for some of the troops? Anyone have any good sources on these guys in addition to figures? Would like to do a platoon (or at least a support squad) for Through The Mud and The Blood.

Wee Wolf have some Austro Hungarians planned. Check out their Facebook page.

That uniform looks similar to German jägers?

axabrax:
Yeah they are similar.  Looks like at one point a dozen or so years ago Scarab Miniatures was planning on doing alpine troops but it crapped out.  Some of the generic Austrians do look the part and Brigade Games and the company you mention have quite a few to choose from for conversions.  I thought there were some specialists on the Italian front on this forum but maybe they are AWOL.  I thought there was a website in Italy they had really good info but I’ve lost my bookmark.  Will post anything interesting I find here in the future.  It might also be that in combat the difference between the Alpine troops and regular troops is nothing more than boots and very small insignia or uniform details, so it may not really matter that much unless you were planning on gaming a mountaineering expedition  :)

Some of these Germans might work in a pinch.

Metternich:
Scarab does a three piece set in very large 28mm of Rommel and two comrades.  You'll note that one of them, although wearing a Mutze, is carrying the Stahlhelm.   I think by Caporretto the Gebirgsjager wore the steel pot in combat.   I think you can get away with any late war stormtrooper figures (i.e. puttees, not jackboots),  As for  Austrians, they do have the right cap and boots with socks, but the wrong rifle, and the characteristic Austrian 3-point breastpocket flap on their tunic.  So there is nothing perfect out there now (other than Scarab's 3-piece Rommel set); you'll be making one compromise or the other.

This picture isn't identified as Gebirgsjager, but it shows German troops in exactly the sort of terrain that Rommel fought over.
