There is a price increase of 50p on all packs of Perry Miniatures on the 2nd April so if any of you guys are interested in purchasing any of their figures do so before that date !!!

These are all lovely figures!! However my only gripe is that Empress Miniatures have already covered these units with equally beautiful sculpts which I have already painted. But this won’t stop me purchasing these packs to mix in with E.M. The NNC command pack is unique !!!

I agree, it is a bit of a shame we're getting stuff that's all pretty much covered already by other ranges. Still lovely, mind.

I quite like the NNC command, think it's better than the equivalent by empress.

Also does anyone know how empress/perry compare height-wise?

very nice subjects..
maybe someone did already see and handled some castings of this AZW range..
in a former post a comparison was made between Perry first Afghans tribesmen designed for Foundry and the late own produced ones.. and it seem that they are quite compatible together....as i have 80% of my AZW armies based on Foundry production plus  a pair of units from  plastic warlord zulu..i would be very curious to know if those Perry types, both NNC and Frontier Light Horse ones, can be fielded side by side with old Foundry ones...the dismounted auxiliary/colonial cavalry is a must if you want to stage  AZW games with realistic cavalry tactics..and Foundry limited his cavalry range  to mounted types..also the Natal Carbineers/Police and  FLH commands should proove very useful

Yay! These are very welcome!  :-* :-*

Although Empress already have these they are too small next to Perry stuff for my taste, Empress about a head shorter comparing my Perry stuff to a friends Empress stuff, that was ruling out Empress for me.

Do wish the Native Contingent with muskets were separate from the command.

Actually I'm not so sure the height is that off now, a little more like half a head!  I was using the metal model of Ntshingwayo kaMahole Khoza that you get free with the Impi deal as a comparison. Using the plastic Zulu's (who are still on their sprue and so a little hard to judge) as a comparison there doesn't seem much of a height difference with Empress after all. Looks like Ntshingwayo kaMahole Khoza is quite a big chap.

For myself Perry and Empress colonial figures are close enough to use side by side, mostly in seperate units from each company but sometimes with figures from both side by side.

RE: Mixing the old Perry sculpted Wargames Foundry Zulu War figures with these new Perry Miniatures ones... I can't say for sure since I don't have any of the new Perry AZW figures on hand, but my guess is the new figures will be visibly bigger than the old Foundry ones. IMHO the old Foundry NWF/Second Afghan War British and Indian figures push the envelope for arguably being too small to field alongside Perry and Empress figures, though I still do it for a handful of units such as my Foundry Gurkhas and Guides. Same does not apply to the old Foundry Pathan tribesmen, also sculpted by the Perrys, which are a bit bigger than their Anglo-Indian counterparts and mix well with their recently released cousins from Perry Miniatures.

I have some of these packs on my workbench at the moment. I have both packs of Rorke’s Drift Heroes (VLW 25 & 26) and both packs of Natal Native Contingent (VLW 43 and 44). I have also recently painted some of the plastic Zulus (VLW 41).

The plastics are very nice figures and go together well. The anatomy and sculpting is excellent. These are the best Zulus that I have painted. I already have about 150 Zulus including Black Tree Design metals, Empress metals, and a lot of Wargames Factory plastics. Black Tree are also very good.

The Perry metals are quite poor in comparison with their plastics. The sculpts look OK from 50 cm+ but when you get close to paint them they are not as crisp. The castings of the Rorke’s Drift Heroes had a lot of flash, which surprised me as the moulds are fairly new.

I have also painted Rorke’s Drift character sets from Black Tree and from Empress. Empress are nice sculpts but rather small in comparison with the other brands. The Black Tree Design Zulu War range is very nicely sculpted and their Zulu War British are by far the nicest to paint. Unfortunately, the pith helmets are historically incorrect. I swapped many of mine for Wargames Factory pith helmets.

Have received the latest AZW from Perry Miniatures and I'm delighted by the quality and poses.

Looking forward in painting these miniatures in the coming months.
Best wishes,
Helen

I've got empress and Perry colonials and have never noticed any difference in height worth noting. Especially as people are different heights!
