I think I may want to do some truncated trees like that at some point. 

They're easy and cheap to make, the only things that are irritating is waiting for them to dry at this point and that you need a sturdy base to eventually put them on or you'll have warping issues over time.

I was actually thinking of using CDs for the smaller ones (I have an abundance of both normal and half sized ones). Large pieces like the tunnel-tree may need some consideration about the base.

CDs can work, I've been buying larger, laser cut wood circles from the craft store for terrain basing for a while now. There are some other shapes as well, such as the ovals I'm using for the trunks with fallen sections

Got the next two steps done. The log sections are currently just sitting there on the bases and will be glued in place after painting.

And the next step down the road to completion.

Well, got through with the painting for the trees, waiting overnight for the spray varnish to fully dry before basing.

And now with a partial flock job...

And now I've done that last few actual steps, just waiting for the watered down glue to dry and making sure it isn't stuck from some drips over the sides.
