Bad Day at McGinty

McGinty, 40 miles west of McGinty's Crossing, a couple of Jenkins Brothers are enjoying a quite drink. Unbeknown to them, the Pinkerton Detective Agency have been tracking them and have finally caught up with these couple of outlaws.

The Set Up

Scene One - "Ambush"

Stumbling out from Rogan's Saloon, Pete Jenkins notices the stranger in a slicker in the middle of Main Street. Playing it cool, Pete decides to head out of town when he hears a shot behind him. His brother Clint has opened fire on a shady figure lurking in a part built shop.

Suddenly, Clint is on the floor and Pete is hitting the trail ...

Pinkertons everywhere...

Pete, in the back yards, badly wounded ...

Scene Two "Heist" to follow ...

Buildings by 4Ground (with a bit of weathering and scratchbuilt bases), Pinkerton from Artizan and painted by The Somnambulist.

That looked great. What really impressed me is how you have weathered your buildings and painted the edges. So often I see MDF buildings with the edges left unpainted and you can immediately tell they don't look real. Yours do, so well done!

Hi Vampifan,

Thanks for the kind comments - I've enjoyed working on the 4Ground buildings and have a few more to build and the "Rogan's Bar" building to finish.

Lovely stuff Harvey. :-*

How does DMH compare to FfoL?

We really like DMH; the cards make for interesting tactical choices, and the game feels like you are in a scene from a movie. Very atmospheric.

Thanks Nick,

How does DMH compare to FfoL?

The similarity is that both games use cards to determine order of play ... and that's about it.

DMH, as Steveburt, says plays as if you are in a movie scene - the published scenarios are split into three and the winner of each may have a slight advantage in the next part of  the scenario.

The game uses D20 for combat and D10 for nerve tests, but the big play is the cards themselves. In FFoL only retain cards do specific things (i.e. 1 eyed Jack affects shooting) whereas in DMH every card has a specific ability. The models on the board are dealt cards to determine playing order and you also have a hand of cards, usually specified by the scenario (5 normally). The cards in your hand can be played on your opponent's posse to affect their actions, usually in a negative way or on your own posse to enhance their abilities. The picture cards are posse specific - we were playing Outlaws and Pinkertons and the number cards are red for the "good" guys and black for the "bad" guys.

The three part scenarios with two players usually lasts about 1.5 hours.

I enjoy playing both games; my regular gaming bud and I will play DMH as we both know the rules well. FFoL is great with 4 or more people, especially with different objectives for each posse.

DMH has a campaign system, but I haven't really played it. Also it has alternative settings with "The Curse of Dead Man's Hand" and "Dead Man's Hand Down Under".

We are queuing up a game of "Dracula's America" so it will be interesting to see how it comepares to the other two.

Thanks Harvey. Interesting to know the differences. I had eyed up DMH for a while before being seduced by the delights of FFoL.  ;) lol

Scene Two - Heist

The Jenkins Brothers find themselves back in McGinty, holed up in the centre of town after a successful raid on the Wells Fargo stagecoach. With Cletus and Yellow Knife (kin) posted in the street, the posse have no worries. Unfortunately, the Pinkertons are also resting up in McGinty ...

Cletus spots a couple of Pinkertons walking up Main Street, he losses a shot and then dives for cover

The Pinkertons walking up Main Street take fire from Cletus Jenkins ..

... as he seeks cover in a part build building.

The Pinkertons move in ..

And the Jenkins Brothers break cover

Yellow Knife manages to get a shot off

The Pinkerton finds he's attracting lead

With a rush, the Jenkins Brothers make the towns limit and are free to spend their ill gotten gains.

Scene three up next ..

Great looking game and that extra work on the buildings really pays off.

Scene Three - Showdown

"This town ain't big enough for all of us ..."

With the posses facing each other, the time had come to rid the town of the Outlaws ... or Pinkertons

The Jenkins Brothers and kin face the Pinkertons

The Pinkertons face the Jenkins Brothers

The Jenkins Brothers scatter in all directions as the lead starts to fly, although Boss Jenkins has managed to keep himself out of trouble by carefully positioning himself on the roof of the "Moustachery"

Yellow Knife clambers onto the roof of the Sherifs Office in the hope of some long range shots with his repeater, but ends up attracting more fire than he anticipated - even the signage couldn't save him!

Meanwhile, one of the Pinkertons eases through one of the partially built buildings and opens fire across the roof tops at Boss Jenkins.

With Jenkins Brothers falling like flies, Boss and Yellow Knife escape leaving the town to the Pinkertons.

Most enjoyable. Your buildings, scenery and figures were a treat for the eyes.
