Can't stop looking at these. They are so incredibly over the top. The very definition of Gothic...

If you ever make a trip up here, that whole area of Glasgow is worth a visit. As well as the Necropolis, there's the Glasgow Cathedral....

The St Mungo religious museum( not normally my thing, but there was some cool stuff in there). This shield was one of their exhibits....

...and the oldest house in Glasgow. Although I couldn't get in tgere because I had a pram with me and those ancient glaswegians must have been tiny going by the size of the doors!

And here's a couple of extra pics of the cemetery....

I meant to say as well...the round sandstone tomb had some weird wee faces around the roof....

Some of the Alexander Greek Thomson buildings in Glasgow are also pretty cool for inspiration.

We visited the Necropolis in 2016 when we had a free afternoon in Glasgow before moving onto the Lochs. I took many a photo - hope you don't mind me adding a choice few of them to your thread:

As someone who has been strangely fascinated by graveyards as far back as I can remember, I was truly spellbound by this huge place. Very gothic, very eerie but also beautiful.

That's one scary "Death" on the silver shield.

Mind if I put up some inspiration, given that I've never been to Scotland and so my images will be of other places?

I am compelled to share.

Old station building at Haslem's Creek Necropolis No. 1, AKA Rookwood Cemetery, late 19th century.

And that is Mortuary, where the service begins, between Central and Redfern stations in Sydney, NSW (this has been recently moved).

London had its own Necropolis Railway from Waterloo to Brookwood Cemetry near Woking.

London terminus ...

... and one of the stations in the Cemetry

There was a mystery novel called The Necropolis Railway, about the London Waterloo necropolis line.

Similar lines existed in Melbourne, and Newcastle; the latter was a regular commuter stop as well, so it stayed until the 80s. Regular services occurred to visit the graves, though no dead people had gone by rail for some years by then.
Otherwise, they all disappeared soon after the Second World War, if that.

The Melbourne service even had a funeral tram that met the train, after collecting the party from the stop.
