Lady Godiva
« on: April 12, 2018, 07:33:36 AM »
I painted my first anglo-saxon miniature: It's not a warrior but Countess Godgifu of Mercia (or Lady Godiva in latin) who lived at the times when Duke William of Normandy conquered Britain. She was (and is still is) known to ride naked down the streets of Coventry to convince her husband Leofric, Earl of Mercia to lower taxes. The paintjob was inspired by the vintage movie poster.

Fun model, but it belongs on the fantasy board.

Why would you say that? This board has Robin Hood and King Arthur, and unlike them, we can be pretty certain she actually existed.

I've got one, but I've only ever got around to painting the horse. Nice job.

Thanks, keep on painting - it's the lady that's the fun part to paint!  :D

Countess Godiva certainly existed. The ride is as certainly pure fantasy.

You're being terribly pedantic. :?

I am of the opinion the miniature and the subject falls perfectly on this board.

...but is the side-saddle appropriate for the mid 11th century? If not this is totally fantasy.

Well, it's certainly an interesting idea that we should use "it didn't actually happen" as the working definition for what goes on the Fantasy board. It's going to get a bit crowded over there if we do, though.

I am content if the admins feel to shift this to the fantasy board, although I never intended to paint this miniature for fantasy wargaming.

(I can neither proof truth in her legend, nor do I want to argue about the truth in it, but I read that the legend dates back to the 13th century which is old enough for me to consider it somehow "historical" at least.)

When this set was released it came along with a fully clothed (and slightly sour faced) authentic looking Saxon noblewoman miniature as well. I think the blurb said something about that being the "real" version of Godiva.

This model is clearly a late 20th century interpretation of an idealised female form, so I think she needs moving to the Conflicts that Came in From the Cold board.
Appropriately enough given her clothing choices.
