Obviously trying to colour match black and white photographs is a bit difficult!
But yes it definitely looks quite black to me.
Keeping it the current colour underneath is going to be a stark contrast.
Subtle is the word here!
It's going to make or brake the final touches to this magnificent piece.
(It's made me enter the Ribble Rumble just to get a closer look!)

How about using Matt black spray cans at a distance and building up using "over spray" just letting it settle as dust?
And yes maybe a bit darker base colour.

The lower parts seem to be grey/light brown and the dark seems to be grime or soot from the fire

Note those pics are post war maybe even movie sets, that's an IS-3 in the foreground and the other buildings have been removed.

Yes, the top photo - footage from the feature films.
I had understood that you can use them as a model for the painting damage and zakopchonnosti building. Painters and modelers have previously solved the problem that you are facing.

Best be quick on hols tomorrow

Much happier with the colour (mucky stone building wasn't one of the options in wilko)

Once I return from hols I'll fire up the airbrush with some black in it and soot it up. I'll repaint the damage cream like freshly exposed stone.
