Berlin at the end of the 19th century

Did I understand correctly that all those buildings are paper models? If so, it's even more impressive. I also didn't get the scale of the entire thing; do you know?

And just imagine playing what-if scenarios on that terrain; War of the Worlds, German style. Or maybe a Russian or French invasion. And going out on a limb here; some shots reminded me very much of certain Naboo scenes in Episode 1 of Star Wars... ;D

Mostly paper, cardboard and at least in some cases balsa wood was added to the interior for better stability.
The man who initially started building the model was called Horst Dühring, after his death the people who helped with creating the model just kept on adding to the diorama.
Amongst other stuff he also built a model of Königsberg- I think there's a youtube video showing some of the details.

Wow!  I'd been contemplating a bit of Berlin for the 1921-2 kerfuffle and that is just fantastic - inspirational rather than copy-able though  :)
