Which version of Gandalf is that mini? I don't think I have it in my collection...  :? (I have an insane amount of GW LotR minis, but at one point had to realize, that they were going to keep churning out more versions of the same characters, and the prices were becoming too steep for me)
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

This project is looking good.  I think the job you have done on the Oathmark dwarves  is the best I have seen.  I see you have done the same as me and used a Reaper ogre as a troll, you have just painted yours a lot better and put me to shame :(.
Well done.  I will follow this with interest.

Ohhhhh, what a great idea. 13 Dwarves from the Hobbit, all with the right coloured hoods. I'm doing that too!

Very nice. Great miniature choices. I highly recommend the reaper standing dire bear as a big bear. (It's my avatar after all) roughly the same size as the old grenadier giants.

Thanks again, everybody!

@Diablo Jon: the Wargs are all 'Wolves' (and a Dire Wolf as Pack-Leader) from Otherworld Miniatures- not cheap, but exactly how I imagined Wargs to look. Only the best for this project!  :)

@Jacksarge: Thanks very much- as soon as I've finished typing this I'm going to take a look at your own Middle Earth Thread!

@Askellad: Cheers! I went for a mix of Gripping Beast's Late Romans and Viking kits with some heads from their Dark Age Warriors as I wanted them to look like a once-prosperous folk who had fallen on harder times- only a few have helmets as I reckon they wouldn't have had time to get fully equipped before Lake Town was burned by Smaug. The blue halved design on their shields is meant to represent the Long Lake itself!
When I get around to my Arnorians / Gondorians I will be using 'pure' Late Roman figures...

@Beefcake: Ah, cheers for that suggestion, I'll have a look for it on Ebay! One question- does the Dire Bear not have those large bony plates/spines on it's back, though?

@Nicknorthstar: As soon as I saw the hooded Dwarf Oathmark heads, it clicked! The book also mentions that Dwalin has a 'blue' beard- I have no idea how I'm going to do that without it looking a bit daft... The perils of doing 'uniform research' from a Fantasy book!

@Ethelred the Almost Ready: You are too kind! It took me ages to find miniatures that matched my own interpretation of Tolkien's Trolls, but as soon as I saw those Reaper Ogres I knew they were it! I bought three variants so I could use them as Bill, Tom and Bert in a skirmish scenario down the line...

@Argonor: I hear you on the price thing! I think this particular Gandalf was released at about the same time as the War of the Ring massed battles game, but I could be wrong... To me, he seems the least 'Ian McKellan' of the GW Gandalfs. Not that I have anything against his performance in the films, of course!

I'm feeling galvanized to get cracking on Thorin's Company today, so thanks again for the encouragement, folks!

Ha! While I was thinking those dwarves came with hoods exactly because of the Hobbit! :D

Great thread - love your interpretation of the different forces.

Blue beards - black base, main colour for highlights is The Fang (GW's old Fenris Grey or Shadow Grey), which is a very desaturated blue (a  lot of grey in it).
