Star Wars Skirmish Rules?
« on: April 22, 2018, 12:34:32 AM »
I'm curious to know what rules people are using for their Star Wars battles games, skirmish, or larger?

There's the old WEG Star Wars Miniatures Battles rules, and many others.

Thinking it might be fun to do some small-scale skirmishing/role-playing, on Tatooine, in that "...retched hive of scum and villainy...", Mos Eisley.  Might be fun to consider a number of factions there, with various competing/allied agendas, just for grins, e.g. regular inhabitants, sand troopers, aliens, rebels, bounty hunters, crooks, etc..

Then again, perhaps Anchor Head might be another option, less constrained by SW lore.

Anyone have any details on Anchor Head to share, too?

Blasters and Bulkheads 2nd ed. Made for SW you could say.

There's a Fubar SW expansion too.

I would recommend looking into Starfall. A FREE squad level skirmisher that covers nearly every sci-fi motif imaginable within 20 unique factions. There are six factions that easily fit all SW universe soldiers and specialists, titled "The Path", "The Dark Path", "The Resistance", "Nomadic Raiders", "Legion of Mankind" and "Hunters". With so many factions, you're dedinitely not limited to playing strictly within the SW universe either.

While you could spend hours building/outfitting your warband, the rules are sleek and competative, and the game play is quick and engaging, especially if you set the points limit low. Campaign and Tournament rules coming as well, with organized play starting in the summer!

You can download the FREE rules and supplements at: https://www.starfalltt.com . There you will also find links to the game's Youtube Channel and FB support group. Enjoy!

Pulp Alley and Rogue Stars do the job marvelously and A Fistful of Kung Fu also worked surprisingly smoothly.

I really have no idea what I'm doing.

There is always 7tar Wars:

Though there are cards involved but only as part of the turn countdown (it is a game in three acts).

You can pretty much play it with Rogue Stars right out of the book...

I use Fubar for the Clone Wars. I have used it about 6 times. I have modified it for large battles. I have a couple 100 troops on the table along with around 30 vehicles. I do it in 18mm. I also use the modified activation where each unit gets 2 actions if they activate. Fail and you still get one. I'm tinkering with morale as well.

I've had great success running Star Wars games using FUBAR.

Seriously, I'd love for someone to try battling this with 18th or 19th century rules, say En Garde!, though you'd want something 'fantasy' for manifestations of the force...

And, before you ask, I always depend on the kindness of my friends to set up games. Gawd bless 'em, they come through.

Void Pirates, absolutely perfect for characterised skirmish games. Have used them for Star Wars, Star Trek, Guardians of the Galaxy and generic skirmish.  Work for 2 player or multiplayer games.

I'm a believer in using RPG rules for skirmish games. So for Star Wars I use the WEG Star Wars Roleplaying Game rules. I've also considered using Savage Worlds. Both are super easy to learn.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I will check them out.

I forgot about FUBAR, and that looks like a decent option, for quick, fun games.  Some of the others too, and free is always an attractive option, price-wise.

One of the websites I ran across even has cards for use with SW, though sadly, no Sand Troopers.  Easy enough to come up with, I suspect, and the suggestion on the site for them is they activate on a 3+ (like for Imperial Scouts too), as opposed to a 4+ for regular Storm Troopers, and 5+ for Rebel Troops.  Makes sense.

Will need to think up some other attributes/skills for them too, which might be useful, to make them hardened veterans.  Perhaps add on a few special skills for each trooper, for small games, for more RPG-like scenarios, with just a few Imperials searching for Rebel Spies and Subversives - shouldn't be too hard to do, and to keep track of, for a squad or two of troops, patrolling the back alleys of Mos Eisley, or Anchor Head.

I've got a set of home-brew rules that you're welcome to try out.  They give a quick game with a dozen or so figures per player.

If you're interested let me know and I'll send you the rest of the cards etc.
