My first 6mm napoleonic army
« on: April 23, 2018, 03:11:13 PM »
My current project is a bit different to the usual scales I paint. We decidet to raise armys for Black Powder using 6mm miniatures. Unit wise we keep the standard strenght from the rules (24 dudes for a normal size line unit).
That way we not only pay much less but its also much easier to paint as the miniatures lack most of the details from 28mm ones (which always was the reason to not start napoleonic games in 28mm for me).

My basic army will consist of two brigades. One infantry brigade with 4 line Regiments, 1 light regiments and one flank regiment (all from the 42nd regiment of foot or Black Watch) supported by 4 cannons from the foot artillery. The other brigade will be a cavalry brigade containing 4 regiments of heavy dragoons (The Royal Scots Greys).

I already painted up all the line regiments and one regiment of dragoons. This leaving me 33 Dragoons, 45 infantrymen 16 crewmembers for the cannons and the cannons and general staff to paint.

These are not the best pictures and somehow the basing effect looks terrible through bad lightning.

the army so far

42nd Highlanders in firing line

infantry in marching columns

and in square formation

Scots greys

its really hard to take decent close ups of these tiny miniatures with a phone
They are most impressive at a distance ^^

hope you enjoy. C&c are welcome.
more in my blog

cheers

Great painting, look smashing.

Multi battalion squares were unusual simply because they took a lot longer to form than a single battalion square.  Squares were actually pretty small in foot print.  Not sure how you can represent a square with three bases - perhaps just back to back with the colour section in the middle?  It would differentiate it from a column.

yep its a formation I probably never use in the game but it looks much better than the usual 3 base square. ;)

Thanks, I just finished painting the rest of the cavalry and the comanders. Hopefully I can base then in the next few days.

Cheers

For a three base square, I have 2 bases back to back (you could just leave it like that or put the pair on a flocked square sabot) and put the third base at one end to cap the other two bases.

My eyes find them very hard to identify on a table .
You have done a very  good job.
Check out Steve Jones 6mm collection , it is inspirational for this scale.

Thanks.

I finished the cavalry and command and rebased everything. I think it looks better now.
But I still struggle in taking decent pictures in that scale.

I´ve try to take another closeup. I dont bother with painting the tartan on the kilts but instead washing the blue with green to give it the illusion.

If you are painting tartan pattern in 6 mm  :o

Did you consider it?  I briefly thought about doing some moustaches on some cavalry then thought much better of it.

I considered painting the Tartan and even the checkerpattern on the bonnets.
There were ust two reasons why I actually dont: At first I planned in doing a whole scottish army
(From all the 160 Infantry miniatures only 16 wearing trousers at all), so that would be insane.
The second and most importand reason was the time.
I set my deadline for the army to completely finished by the end of the month. Its more of a speed painting for me ^^

cheers

Lovely work!
I painted 2500+ 6mm figures many years ago. My eyes were better then!
You have done these justice!!

Don't lose your momentum!
