Love the Marder III. FYI, tank wheels were very seldom painted with cammo patterns on that. Rather each wheel would be a solid color. The reason for this is when the tank is moving and the wheels are spinning the multi-colored wheels would 'strobe' and bring MORE attention to the tank.
Thanks pease1 I did not know that, I must admit to not being much of an historian and more of a bloke who likes playing games with nice toy soldiers
I just did a quick google though and there are a lot of people making that mistake as there are lots of pictures of tanks with camouflaged road wheels.
Don't get me wrong I'm not doubting you or your sources for one minute (I don't have the knowledge to do that) but the reasoning behind what you say doesn't make much sense either.
To say that the colours would strobe and bring more attention to the tank, I mean I think a 20 to 30 tonne tank moving at speed would get a fair amount of attention anyway.
My understanding is that the camo was applied in many different ways and on this vehicle the young driver 'Willie' got carried away with the vehicle mop when he was given the job of applying the paint
so I blame him
