Crete 1941 5th Mountain Division figures
« on: April 23, 2018, 07:27:48 PM »
Hi all
I am planning a Crete campaign this year and was wondering if I could use Perry plastic Afrika Korps figures as Tropical uniform Gebirgsjager  to use alongside my Perry Fallschirmjager- what does anyone think

Cheers
Steve

What about using Perry plastic Afrika Korps and painting them as Gebirgsjager - any thoughts ?

Thanks

In my local group, we've been building forces for a Crete campaign over the last few months, and one of my colleagues asked me the same. I've done an edited pic of the Perry DAK screw to indicate which parts could work (green), which less so (yellow) and which probably won't (red).

The main issue, as far as I know, is that there are very few pictures showing Gebirgsjaeger in actual tropical uniform during Operation Mercury, the overwhelming majority wearing their normal uniform with distinctive climbing boots and backpacks which they already wore during Operation Marita in Greece. If you add a steel helmet, there is precious little to differentiate them from regular Wehrmacht infantry, visually-speaking.

I opted for the Heer46 Gebirgsjaeger, which are a bit pricy and suffer a bit from scrawny weaponry (plus a lack of sMG34),.but overall match quite well the Perry metal figures in size, bulk and style. The Gorgon range is nice and comprehensive, but doesn't, IMHO match with anything other than Artisans and maybe BTD.
