TYW/ECW Guns
« on: April 27, 2018, 06:55:43 PM »
Hello All,
As I pick up on my benched TYW army using Bicorne & Renegade. I’m looking for some substantial artillery pieces that will be used as heavy/siege.
Now I know Bicorne have some great guns but are quite pricey, could I use the Northstar 1672 or Front Rank 18th C guns instead?

The TAG guns are pretty much in the same price range as the Bicorne ones - more expensive even as a TAG Saker or Culverin will set you back 12 quid as opposed to 10 for a Bicorne one. The Bicorne models aren't cheap but they are some of the nicest ECW/TYW artillery pieces around.

1st Corps are certainly an option as stated above :

And although their guns are aimed at a slightly later period, Warfare have a couple of useful positional guns that will fit the bill if you aren't too picky about dates :

The venerable Hinchliffe range is also available from Hinds Figures and features an ECW 'cannon royale' that may be of interest to you :

If you want to get the really accurate ones go for Empress - they are the dogs cajones ( although I am a bit biased!).

Imho that Hinchliffe cannon royale looks pretty good. A friend of mine used to design artillery pieces for Hinchliffe when he was young. I 'll have to ask him whether that's one of his.

The Hinchcliffe Cannon Royale was a fantastic piece in its day (the one I still own is very much cherished) but I think it’s actually  too small for the gun it’s meant to depict? To be honest a saker is normally the largest ECW Artillery piece you’d see on most battlefields (although there are some exceptions, e.g Essex took a very well equipped trayne with him on the Gloucester campaign for example). Sieges, well, that’s another thing entirely!

What was it Hyde said about the King’s Artillery trayne ? The “sponge that can never be satisfied “?

(PS Paul, still drooling over your TYW figures! Fantastically inspirational!)

Thank you all for the helpful suggestions.
With the larger scale of the Bicorne crew this is a consideration.
I have a 1672 siege gun that I’ll have a play with.
The Cannon Royale looks great with all of that additional detail, which might go well with a Catholic League/Imperialist army.
