The climax of one of the games at Little Wars 2018, as South African armor and troops burst into the Cuban-held village

I headed off to Chicago this past weekend for Little Wars 2018, a convention I had not been to in about a half dozen years. I ran my Wars of Insurgency scenario, "Smokin's Some Cubans," four times. Full report and lots of photos on my Lead Legionaries blog:
https://leadlegionaries.blogspot.com/2018/04/little-wars-2018-war-torn-village-in.html

The players all seemed to have a blast, and sales of the rules were brisk (I've always wanted to use that term... lol). My favorite moment was my final game on Saturday night, when a high school senior and a 7th grader eagerly plopped down for my game, again. They'd played on Friday, too, and declared it their favorite game of the convention.

Most of my 20mm figs are from Liberation Miniatures, and the Ratel-20s are from S&S Models

Rules are available on the First Command Wargames website:

Very nice game, and interesting ruleset. After reading some AAR, I have bought it, of course!

Some great pics Mike.
Glad you had lots of fun at the con.
I have to agree, players make or break a game.
Happy to see good sportsmanship in a game.

Sorry to not reply for awhile, Eric. It was the usual chaos leading up to the end of the school year. Fire away with your questions, monsieur!

Nice battle report. The Conflicts in Africa is something i'm interested in doing in 28mm. Having trouble finding Cubans in that scale tho.

Take caps head from Westwind 's WWII German and find modern bodies with AK 47 to glue them on ...

A TAG body for exemple (here Russian Mafia) :

i think it's could work with a little cutter job on the german caps to make them more"cuban" (more rigid looking).

or take TAG Iraqis Regular

Well, we'll do it in this topic to make it live and known by those interested by the subject and/or your rules  ;)

Question 1 : HTH in Wars of Insurgency

There is no hand to hand combat. i know, it's very rare in modern warfare (or WWII).
Does it's simulated by a "close" firefight in the rules ? Meaning the guys won't go in contact but fire at each other at point blank ?
with no bonus/malus to be so close then ?

Q2  : Morale

The morale rule the lost of men in the squad (when reach the 1/2 strength).
In your test games, do you try to use it for other situations....like go in a close action like reach a defended area (like a bunker, sand bags position, try something courageous, etc....).

more to follow

thanks for the answers
Eric

Question 1 : HTH in Wars of Insurgency

I actually meant to put those rules in -- just in case! In hand-to-hand, roll a figure's "small arms" to attack. For defense, roll on their troop quality dice -- no cover bonus dice (unless you're simulating defending a wall or something, then use your judgement).

Q2  : Morale

Your suggestion of using it to "close" with a bunker or something is an interesting idea. I would say try it out. Certainly would make the leader important to be around! It would be something I'd really use only as a scenario rule, though, I think.

Thanks for the questions! Feel free to follow them up with more. The plan is to do a follow-up scenario book with additional rules (HTH, helicopters, etc.) this summer.

Thank you Mike. ;)

Q3 : WWII ?
Do you think, the rules can be used for WWII....i have in mind not great tanks battle but small skirmish around buildings (like Stalingrad and battle for a street or a building control) or Jungle warfare.

Q4 : Small arms.
Does it's possible to create a new category for small weapons ?
Like a difference between the ones used in WWII (rifle, PM, etc....) and the ones used in modern warfare (assault rifle and high rate of fire weapon).
Weapon Chart p17

WEAPON TYPE               Militia Regular Professional
Infantry, small arms          1       2              3
Infantry, LMG                    3      4               5

there is a gapbetween this two weapon class that could be fill with
Infantry, small arms
(Assaut rifle, etc...)           2       3              4

Saw Mike's game running at LW. Seemed like he had quite a few players for each iteration and his pics are a great representation of what he had "on the table". If he returns next year I hope my schedule allows me to jump into a game and tryout the rules and whatever scenario he's come up with.

20mm seems to be the perfect scale for gaming this period in terms of physical scale and eye appeal... and with all the figure manufacturers (Liberation, Elheim, Combat [now with Covert Intervention Games] and some of the odd Platoon 20 or various plastics) and the numerous 20mm-1/72-1/76-1/87 vehicle and terrain manufacturers, including HO Scale railroad stuff, how can you not find what you need for any scenario.

Two cents worth,
Bill
