Space Explosion Marker - How?
« on: May 01, 2018, 05:04:02 PM »
In would like to have an explosion marker for when, for instance, a ship is blown up in X-Wing (and I take a photo).

Any suggestions on, how to make something that looks good, please??
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

I've been needing one as well, and was giving it some thought.
I have not yet done anything, but I was pondering something translucent.
Maybe something made as a mold, then just filling it with hot glue or something, and tinting with inks.
Cheap, easy, nice looking. (Hypothetically, since I haven't yet tried it)

Thanks for your answer!

Hmm, yeah, a clear material might work.
I am pondering hard about the shape (and how to build it), though, I really hope, somebody has some experience to share...

Can't find the tutorial that would be perfect for you, but basically wooden beads on a stick with hardend clump foliage stuck on explosion wise.

The ball would be the expanding hot gas, so red/yellow/blue fire, the tufts mostly black and the very tips red/yellow/white bright burning bits of wreckage.

There are some nice images I've seen in the past.

Check Google Images for ideas.

Depends upon if you want to sacrifice minis, or not, to really sell the overall effect.

If not, perhaps just some appropriately colored pieces of polyfill fiber, like they stuff pillows with, would work.  Mount them on a flight stand, as desired.

Another idea might be to use some expanding foam.

The trick is that you won't really have wispy or thick smoke in a space explosion. It's pure boom (and debris).

Had to google polyfill fiber, looks usable for a lot of  smoke/explosion purposes, thanks!

Yeah, but I want 'cinematic' explosions. Movie logic defies the laws of physics  lol
Expanding foam might be good for some interesting 'blast' shapes, thanks!

This is something along the line Gunbird mentioned. Using clump foliage. I had a link to another tutorial but it is dead now. Curse you internet  :?

I think I can work with that - especially the one with the fiery blast in the first pic looks like something I could use, maybe with a larger central 'ball'... I might go with a cotton or styrene ball as the base shape...  o_o

Thank you!

Amazing how fast time flies while Googling......anyhoo:

....the puffy balls look more like what I mean, but then add clump foliage to that and more black. Really wishing I had saved that page the odd 10 years ago I actually saw it.....
