Perry's British Intervention Force (1861-68)???
« on: May 11, 2018, 03:56:57 AM »
So... this range... is it good for any real conflict or is it only really suitable for the 'What if' scenario the models were designed for?

Some of the figures would be useful for gaming Ridgeway or other Fenian raids into Upper Canada:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenian_raids

Yup, the Fenian Raids, Ambela and the Maori Wars are the obvious ones but only if you pick the ones in frocks and forage caps.  At a pinch you could use the same figures for the Abyssinian Campaign as the serge frocks were used for part of the campaign of but you’d actually be better off using the old Perry sculpted Foundry range for China in airpipe helmets. They could be used to supplement the Foundry figures for China as well onbviously enough (2nd Opium War).

If you want alternative something that’s a bit more than pure fantasy, there’s always the ‘Pig War’ of 1859 which actually did see an armed stand-off between Britain and the US in the waters off British Colombia. Britain landed Royal Marines and the US sent a battalion. Could very easily have ended in tears.

The lost expedition of 1865 through the hole in the North Pole into the interior of the Earth, of course!
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

I'm using mine for a 'what if' invasion of Japan. There were several regiments in China in the 1860's and it was quite a tense situation in Japan at the time.
cheers

I use them for my colonial New Zealand Wars army: https://arteis.wordpress.com/2016/11/20/colonial-new-zealand-wars-of-the-1860s/

Here's a sampling of some of the pics from the above link:

Another 'what if' scenario that is not too much of a stretch is the Red River Expedition led by Garnet Wolseley in 1870.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolseley_expedition

The intent of the expedition was to put down the Red River Rebellion (1st Riel Rebellion) at Fort Garry (Winnipeg). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_River_Rebellion

As it happened, Riel and his compatriots departed Fort Garry before Wolseley and Co arrived, but there could have been some action if Riel would have remained.  Wolseley is represented in the BIF command pack https://www.perry-miniatures.com/product_info.php?cPath=23_81&products_id=3862&osCsid=0eam5bn6fmu6a5b78g1g3kmhj7

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but could I ask which packs you would avoid for a New Zealand Intervention Force please Arteis?

I'm fascinated by this conflict and would like to get some miniatures bought and get some games under my belt :)

I'm going to suggest toAlan Perry that he make a Surgeon William Manley figure for the Maori Wars.  Manley was the only person to have been awarded a VC (for rescuing wounded men during an attack on a pah in 1865) and then the Iron Cross (whilst heading an ambulance unit in the Franco-Prussian War).
No plan survives first contact with the dice.

Not I. My first serious history (I hope!) of the NZ Wars has just arrived, The New Zealand Wars: And the Victorian Interpretation of Racial Conflict, James Belich. It's near the top of my pile.....  :D
