Advice regarding Confederate grey uniforms please
« on: May 12, 2018, 03:42:40 PM »
I need some advice, primarely what colours to use, if there are any specific ones that would suit the best colour representation of Confederate uniforms. Any advice are most welcome to painting these uniforms! :)

Foundry triads - Confederate Gray 117, Rebel Gray 118.  And if you want Butternut uniforms to mix in then try Rich Butternut 115 and Drab Butternut 116.

I second these suggestions. I, too, use the Wargames Foundry paint triads for my own Confederate troops.

It might help to know what size figures you are planning to paint.  I do 15 mm and I just use a medium dark gray and highlight and then a lighter gray and highlight.  Washes, if I use them at all, are reserved for the skin tones which are done first followed by hair and then the uniform proper.

Seems to be some debate about the actual prevalence of butternut.

I will be doing a gaming board for 28mm (heroic size I suppose), with a western theme. Not sure about what part of the US it will be, but watching Deadwood again, game me some ideas ;)

"Seems to be some debate about the actual prevalence of butternut."

Butternut has allways been under debate, and will continue to be, a bit like Dunkel Gelb I suppose :D

Depending on the dye used, it seems that some confederate gray uniforms tended to turn greenish grey after some time in the field.

At least it's one of the informations we found when doing ACW re-enactments some years ago.

By under debate, I wasn't referring to the actual 'color' of butternut but its prevalence, apparently not nearly as much as we've been led to think over the years.  I, however, am not repainting any of my troops already in butternut but might paint less if I ever get back to working on that collection of figures.  If I recall the source, it might have been seen more in the west and very little in the east.

Thanks for all the input so far. I didnt have the patience for ordering Foundry colours, so are using various Tamiya paints in the meantime :)
