Good to see that this lot know their Greek alphabet! It's so sad when a modeller assumes it's a V on the shields.
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

Just another 280 to paint?

Nope, Kitty assumes the rest of us are a bunch of numbnuts.

Looking good, those Spartans. A pretty impressive sight  :).

Those look nice! I guess they are the wargames factory ones.

If you are doing a period before the peloponnesian war, you could use other episima (shield devices) than the classic Lamda of Lakedaimon. Generally (not always though) the letter as shield device, denoted a shield given by the state. In the case of Sparta probably started with the inclusion of neodamodeis (freed helots, getting civil rights in order to bolster the hoplite ranks). During the persian wars and before each Spartan could have a personal device or the device of his Mora (regiment). Sparta was basically comprised of many settlements joined together, so each one of them  along with those of the wider region of Lakedaimon gave a Mora and they had their destinct regional device. For example the Mora of Pylos had a leopard, Amyclae had a rooster, Elos had a bull with downward horns, the Mora from Messenia had a goose, Stenyklaros had a boar, Skyritis had an eagle etc.

They look great. The dark red provides a great contrast with the gold.
