Model trees. Big ones. No, bigger than that!
« on: May 13, 2018, 07:37:49 PM »
I'm looking for big model trees. Like in the 30cm to 40cm range. There appears to be nothing on the market. Does anyone have a lead on very large model trees?

The Model Tree Shop ones are pricey, but have a look at their sale page - a few very good discounts.

https://www.themodeltreeshop.co.uk/sale-items.html

I got two of their 30cm ones for £30 rather than £40. Still pricey, but as I wasn't planning to get any more than two I thought I could justify it - and I was just too curious to see what they were like, I'd been debating whether to get them for a while, and when I saw the discounted ones I thought "what the hell let's do it".

The ones I got were the darker of the two here.

REALLY good. The shape and form of the tree is fantastic, there's a good bark texture, and the foliage is both realistic and secure (doesn't shed at all).

Comparison with other trees - from left to right, Woodland Scenics (20cm), Model Tree Shop (20cm), and Model Tree Shop (30cm).

And here they are painted and based.

I picked up some pine trees, about the size you want, from a doll's house shop. Ironically they classed them as 'medium'
well they are to go with !2" tall 'miniatures'

For the size and the work that goes into them they are very reasonably priced.

Playmobil?
Have used some of their trees for Africa.

Britains used to do a 1/32nd scale oak tree that stood about 8 or 10 inches high, not sure if they are still available

That looks pretty decent. How are they sheddingwise?

They don't shed at all, unlike the Woodland Scenics one which shed foliage every time you touch them.  It's not 'clump' foliage on the Model Tree Shop ones, but something else that I imagine comes in sheets, and is very securely glued on. Judge for yourself how good it looks.

I have the Britains' Oak Tree. It's quite a nice model, when it is one piece. It's probably actually about in scale for a large oak tree in 1:56 scale.
But it sheds bits and pieces all the time. The leaves are rubbery things which plug on to little pins on the branches. They fall off at the drop of a hat. The branches also come apart easily.
