The Civil War Comes To Lawless.
« on: May 14, 2018, 04:36:15 AM »
The Western town of Lawless is unique in many different ways, none more so then the actual beginning and naming of the town itself. Many have wrongly assumed that Lawless gets it's name from,..well being lawless, but nothing could be further from the truth. Well, on second thoughts there are many examples of things that are further from the truth, but I use that saying to underline a point.
Truth be told,..Lawless was originally created by a Spanish priest, Fernando Lawlessio whilst on a personal pilgrimage to start his own order. The first building, was of course a Spanish style church, long since burned down by a lawless mob. Over time, the place took on a more western style town with all the mainstream buildings one associates with such, yet the name remained virtually the same.
The era in which the incident took place played out below, was in the early days of the town's development with few buildings and a population still growing. Well at least the railroad company saw fit to run a line past it even if they did leave a box car derailed on the track!!

This pic shows the main street of Lawless looking from the South. The buildings starting from the bottom show, Kitty's Kat House run by The Madam, Kitty Lewis, The General Store, (Some say Lee, others Grant), Owned by Willy Jones, Milford Welton's Horse Tack store  and lastly Miss Angles owns the Haberdashery. Interestingly we can see 'The Longs' folk coming down the street in their wagon, delivering gun powder and dynamite to the store.
