Model shrubs- 3 different kinds of foliage material
« on: May 15, 2018, 06:45:00 AM »
Once in a while people ask about different types of foliage/flocking products so I made some shrubs with my three favourite types. The branches are grey 3M Stripping Pads teased apart a bit and hot glued to 30mm bases (1 base is 40mm). Each shrub is about 1.5cm high. From left to right is Heki Blattwerk Nr 1620; Woodland Scenics Coarse Turf medium Green; Scenic Express' Superleaf medium Green:

Some close ups in the same order:

I would like to hear other peoples' preferences; do you prefer one of the above products over another shown or is there a better option than the ones I have posted?

I see the shrubs as two different types of plant- the woodland scenics shrub is a small-leafed plant like you would use for a hedge for instance, whilst the other two look to me more like a vine/bramble prickly type shrub.  I would use the two types of shrub together to give a more varied ecosystem, but I couldn't really give a preference between the heki and the superleaf, they both look great and the difference in colour helps add variety.

In short- nice shrubs! 😁

They all look good but my preference would be for the middle one.

They all work for different purposes. And they look great!

Small or large leaves is most often not the issue, it is the lack of variety. Very often foliage also come out not only in to little variety in size and shape but also in colour. Leaves are not monochrome; different trees have different color leaves.

All 3 are good as different plants.

I prefer number 3 though, I like the laurels particularly :p
It has some of the colour variation of number 1, but slightly toned down.

Thank you guys. One company I had forgotten about is Miniatur/Silflor; great leaves but their products can be hard to get in Canada and probably a little expensive to do a large amount of terrain with by comparison.

What I have done in the past is mixed some lighter foliage in with the medium green such as these hedges I made earlier this year for my Pulp Alley tables:

I lean on the far right.  And I also lean back and forth on whether you should snip the straggling bits that stick out or not.  On the one hand, they add to the 'wild' factor, on the other hand they kind of look 'messy'.  I guess it depends on the end goal, wild or sort of neat.  So, maybe if domestic, snip, if not, leave as is.  If you get my drift.

All three look the business. Variety is a good thing.
