a promising start  8)

Thanks. It’s going to need quite a bit of finessing. For example I’ve decided to drill the windows out rather than to build them in. I also got a bit carried away building the front wall and have probably made it too high so might well have to cut it back in due course.

That looks great (if a little time consuming).   :-* :-* Are you going to fill in the small gaps with mortar or leave dry stoned?

Looking good fella!  :-*

Are you going to fill in the small gaps with mortar or leave dry stoned?

Maybe a mixture of the two?
Don't!

Thanks folks. Good points made/asked.  :)

I’m not wanting a drystone look. The plan (and plans change!) is to infill the major gaps during the finessing stage. I’ll probably use a paste of the plaster and some dilute PVA. As to how heavily overgrown it will be ..... I don’t yet know. I’m not planning for any trees inside it (space is tight as it is) but there’ll be tufts in walls, shrubs and maybe some ivy. Debris will be limited, on the basis that it’s been robbed out.

The  most recent change of plan is to lose the back wall to damage, as including it would require too much height for a relatively small space. The main feature is intended to be the big arch and it’ll stand out more without the wall behind it.

I’ve built up the lower sections of the walls that will support the main arch, and so the front section is now really taking shape.

Any joints that are off can also be corrected during finessing, as can over large blocks (which will be cut back).

NB: As I’m going to drill out the windows, I’ll have to add some plaster afterwards to turn blocks into lintels, etc.

Looks fabulous and love the bottle top idea...however I am concerned your window drilling might shake it all to bits - hope it works

Great start. Is it just PVA you are gluing together with?

Thanks folks  :)

I’m not too worried about the drilling Giles. This plaster isn’t as fragile as standard muck as it seems to have a binding agent in it (when applied for DIY, the wall doesn’t need PVAing first).

Is it just PVA you are gluing together with?

It’s not actually PVA but similar: it’s a white resin exterior grade clear-drying wood glue called Evo-Stik Extreme (blue bottle). I have been using it for years instead of PVA but I’ve just found a much cheaper alternative that I might switch to (the one in the Caulked Mat thread).

Onwards and quite literally upwards, I’ve put in the rest of the walls that form the base of the arch. When they have set I’ll add the blocks for the arch. They need to set because after I’ve daubed and placed the blocks, as they start to dry I press down on them to squeeze them into a better position. The top of the lid is 18cm above the baseboard.

That will become a magnificent build, SI! From one brick builder to another: I agree white glue joins are somewhat lacking in appearance when dry. A am looking forward to see how things develop as I am sure I can draw from your experience.
