I hear you Hammers. When I made the Inn I wiped that with superglue then tidied up with GS but that’s just not practical (or probably safe) for a piece this size. I guess we shall see how it develops  :)

Anyways, at risk of spamming my own thread, another update this time with the arch actually constructed.

Any students of architecture or stone masonry should look away as there are flaws in my block laying. Yep, some just might fall out if it weren’t for the glue. All I can say is... finessing to come.

It’s a useful moment to celebrate something from Essex: Hedingham Castle has, I believe, the widest Norman arch in England.

Mine is purposefully less precise - it is abandoned and decrepit.

At this point it’s also worth me mentioning that I’ve clearly drifted away from the plan, what with having now added a roofline above the main arch.

The red marks show where walls will be built up with the black mark being an elevated archway. The other side of that, as indicated by the green arrow, will be external stairs set against the front wall of the courtyard.

Edit: as a side note, I made about 1,200 blocks

More progress. Presently working on the courtyard arches.

Not sure what will happen after that. Either finessing / distressing or adding in the rubble, steps and platforms. Or the flagstones.

I live in a town *rife* with ruins from the 14th century an it used to puzzle me why what looks like the weakest part of the structures, arches and windows, are what stand the longest. Naturally its because they are not the weakest at all but are designed to bear the weight of the whole fucking thing.

Thanks  :)

Onwards and upwards, the steps and floors are now going in.

This is the beginning of stairs that take a turn. They’ll need fine turning once the glue has set, with an additional step cut into the leading edge of each block. A floor will close the gap to the first floor doorway.

These steps ‘protrude’ from the wall. The floor that at the mo has ‘floating’ blocks will idc have plaster beneath to suggest what is left of a collapsed vaulted ceiling.

I might well add a wooden walkway from  door to door. Perhaps quite rough and temporary looking.

This is the corner gatehouse, with work still required to tidy up the steps and ‘vault’ the ceiling beneath the ‘floating’ floor blocks.

 lol

I’ve discovered that it is easy to get carried away with block building. Before you know it a wall is higher than you intended etc.

I blame Oshiro for putting the idea in my head.  ;)
