New to 28mm, Which British do I need?
« on: May 20, 2018, 02:25:44 AM »
I'm all in on 15mm colonial.  But......  thinking I should start paintin' up some 28mms too. (eyesight, I'm 51 and. now need reading glasses to paint 15s :(   )

I figure I should start with a multi purpose British unit like a Zulu Wars infantry (s Africa, Darkest Africa  are my thing,,and. most of my Darkest Africa 15mm terrain works with 28mm)

So who do I go with?   Old Glory?  Perry metal? Perry Plastic?   The
Reigning USTA Florida, and National 50+ Singles Champion  (tennis)  TWO Time Florida 50+ Singles Champion!  Just won State 2019!

My vote is Perry Plastic.  Do you prefer red coats or khaki?

I love red coats.  I have lots of Khaki British in 15mm, but my first 28mm unit must be red.  :)

If going metal (and why not, you  don’t need many Brits?) go Empress. Lovely Paul Hicks sculpts and beautifully cast.

I think you are right to go with the Zulu War era if you are dead set on redcoats, Smokey. As you say, they are probably the most versatile red-coated Brits of the colonial age. You've got the 9th Cape War, Zulu War, Transvaal War, and the Pedi War to keep you going.

And though they aren't quite right, I think most people would find them acceptable proxies for the Egyptian War of 1882 as well.

Also around this time you have the Basuto Gun War, Moorosi's Rebellion, Langalibalele's amaHlubi Rebellion (in which Burt Lancaster lost the use of his arm), and various run-ins with the Tswana. Now I'm not sure if red-coated regulars were involved in any of those, but if one builds a Zulu War army, some of the other (local colonial) elements can be used to game those. Though I'm not sure anybody makes a "Durnford with both arms still working" miniature at this date. :)

We aren't short of figures and its hard to recommend, because we all like different things. My personal preference would be pretty much what has already been covered: Perry if you like plastics, Empress if you hate them (or a bit of both if you like both plastic and metal).

OK, I pulled the trigger on Perry metal Sudan War British infantry.

I'll try plastics next.

The plastics look daunting.  I can see it now, my units all like "ooh, me arms off" and such..    :(b

Just one comment on eye sight issues as it relates to 15mm vs. 28mm.  I painted 15mm figures for years without the aid of magnification.  It wasn't until I got involved with 28mm figure painting that I discovered the need for a magnifying glass.  With the 28mm figures you have much more small detail that I was called upon to paint that were't issues with my 15s... things like eyes and glasses and teeth and fingers and ears, and hair detail, and skin shading and...  There's lots to strain the eyes when you work on the 28s.

So who do I go with?   Old Glory?  Perry metal? Perry Plastic?

Perry's of any type are good. however, if you wanted to the Zulu war empress  are good too

I have to put a mention in for the Black Tree Design Zulu Brits, as nobody else has. Lots of variety of poses.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Perry are great, both metal and plastic. I did 30-odd of their plastic British for the Sudan War. Also added 6 metal to fill out the units.

My zulu War Brits will be Perry plastic and metal, probably a few Empress mixed in.
