Shipping used in the Crusader period?
« on: June 04, 2018, 07:15:15 AM »
I have been following the thread on the Fall of Acre 1291 and don't wish to derail it, so I will ask my question/s here. What ships/vessels were used to transport the Crusaders to the Middle East for the various Crusades? I see that the Portuguese Caravel was after that period but was there a similar predecessor? Would Arab style Dhows have been used or are we looking at Cogs?
Cheers,
Poiter50

Hi Poiter50, thanks for your derailing consideration  ;) but I had the same question as you and arrived at cogs. I started looking at Zvezda The Thomas in 1/72, which should fit. However I found a more cost efficient solution in this:

I have just assembled it and will post some photos with miniatures on the Acre post in the coming days

Thanks traveller, I found that site after my OP when I was viewing one of Eric The Shed's threads and blog. I have just finished reading a Christian Cameron (fiction) book and felt that the Crusaders who travelled from Italy would have used the Genoese or Venetian ships as well as those of the Byzantine Empire. I will look forward to your posts (may even be another sitting in my Inbox as I type).  ;)
