Aquilifer vs Signifer?
« on: May 23, 2018, 10:15:23 AM »
Hi all, not sure if this is the right place but here goes. I've just bought a unit of Victrix's early Imperial Romans and I'm a bit confused. The instructions have parts for a Signifer and an Aquilifer and in my historical ignorance I'm not sure whether each unit you build needs one or the other or both. I'm building them as legionaries rather than praetorians if it makes a difference. Thanks!

Well the Aquiller carries the legion's eagle standard, while the signifer carried the standards for the smaller units, centuries and that, so it depends what the unit you're making represents, depending on game rules, personal preference, so on. Or you could just use whichever you think looks best.

Cheers Voltan. I think I'll stick with a Signifer then for now and do some more reading as to where in the legion the Eagle ought to be.

the Aquilifer is the eagle bearer for the first cohort in a legion, there is only one per legion, there would be a Signifer in each cohort, hope that helps

Cheers Brian. That makes sense now, in that case I might build one for this lot and call them the first cohort. Thanks for the replies.
